Sudbury Yellow

A traditional mid yellow

This soft mid yellow takes its name from the staircase at Sudbury Hall, where renowned colourist John Fowler used this shade to such great effect. Sudbury Yellow is particularly responsive to changes in light, reading as cleaner and brighter in well lit rooms or softening in dimly lit spaces alongside a stronger contrast like New White.

Recommended Primer & Undercoat: Mid Tones

Complementary white: New White

Every one of our paint colours is available in a range of durable interior and exterior paint finishes, each rigorously tested to ensure an exceptional depth of colour and long-lasting finish. For the very best results, we always recommend using a Farrow & Ball Primer & Undercoat – see above for the correct tone for this colour.

All Farrow & Ball finishes except Limewash contain isothiazolinones, which may produce an allergic reaction. Farrow & Ball Limewash contains calcium hydroxide which can cause severe damage in contact with skin or eyes. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful, cheering colour! I was a little nervous about going for it with Sudbury Yellow, having tried a tester pot. I needn’t have worried – it looks fantastic in my home office! Have added teal velvet lampshade and office chair and a teal lamp, which really pop. The colour looks lovely and sunny in daylight and warming in artificial light, when the more mustardy tone comes through. Really easy to live with, I am delighted with it! I used a 2.5L tin of estate emulsion and this did 2 coats in a small room, with a little left over for touching up. Easily applied with a roller. I use F&B for the depth of colour, but also because it’s low odour and a pleasure to work with.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful subtle yellow This yellow changes so beautifully with the light. It's never over powering but intensifies at certain times of day. Love it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love this colour for my living room We are thrilled with our living room in sudbury Yellow. We were slightly anxious before painting thinking it would be too bright but we love it. Its lovely and warm and really goes with our dark wood furniture. All decorated for Christmas 2021.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Brighter than appears in online pictures I ordered a sample pot of Sudbury yellow as it matched the autumnal colors in my new comforter. It is a brighter, less brown yellow than it appears in online photos and goes beautifully with Farrow's Cream, a light warm neutral. I am pairing it with Picture Gallery Red, Oval Room Blue, Olive and Inchyra Blue to bring out the colors in my comforter and to create a trompe l'oeil headboard in my campervan. Should be beautiful when finished!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lovely cheerful colour Originally thought Dead Salmon might be the colour, but it looked too dark. Once we stripped the old wallpaper we found the walls had been yellow. Sudbury yellow matched perfectly. We painted the bookcases and the wall in the same colour.
