A soft black

This soft black is one of the original Farrow & Ball colours - an uncomplicated name for a well loved classic. Off-Black is much more flattering to adjacent colours than stronger blacks because it feels so much milder in tone and has less of the underlying cool blue of Railings or Black Blue.

Recommended Primer & Undercoat: Dark Tones

Complementary white: Dimpse

Off-Black is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 217.

Back in 2010, we moved our entire range to an eco-friendly water base that’s low odour, low VOC and child-safe, becoming the first in the industry to do so. Easy to clean without harmful solvents, in tins that can be recycled again and again, our paints help to reduce the environmental impact of redecorating your home.

Every one of our paint colours is available in a range of durable interior and exterior paint finishes, each rigorously tested to ensure an exceptional depth of colour and long-lasting finish. For the very best results, we always recommend using a Farrow & Ball Primer & Undercoat – see above for the correct tone for this colour.

All Farrow & Ball finishes except Limewash contain isothiazolinones, which may produce an allergic reaction. Farrow & Ball Limewash contains calcium hydroxide which can cause severe damage in contact with skin or eyes. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Estate eggshell off black Bought this for painting a wooden fireplace surround, used the Farrow and Ball dark tones primer first. Then did 2 coats of the off black, both were really nice to paint with (I used mini rollers) and dried in good time! Would definitely recommend and worth the price!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great feature wall With the television taking up most of the space on the wall and the white chest of drawers underneath it popped right of the wall. I love off black, even though I am drawn to light colours. Such easy paint to apply as well. Happy all the way round!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful colour, incredibly easy gloss finish. I recently repainted our bog standard black front door with Off Black gloss. The softer tone of black complements the red bricks of the house much better and also goes very well with a new light and number plaque. The big plus for me was how easy the gloss is to paint on, getting a perfect finish despite my non professional decorator status. Ease of washing up with water is a total bonus. Really happy!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Off Black feature wall with Dimiti We thought we'd have a go at a feature wall from top to bottom of the house to keep us busy during lockdown. We threw caution to the wind and went for Off Black. The finish has a hint of powdery white/grey, very much like a blackboard and (we think) works with the rest of the room painted in DIMITI as well as mid to dark wood floors as well as antique brass and elements of greys and of course blacks. We're very pleased with the result. One coat was almost enough but gave it a second coat to be sure. Not sure what it is but I find it so much easier painting with F&B. Love to know why. If you look carefully you can see some uneven shades/streaks but it doesn't diminish the look at all. I put this down to my lack of skill - maybe I should have thinned one of the coats? I should say that we went for Estate Emulsion. It will be easy to mark and given it looks like a giant blackboard I wouldn't recommend it where there are young children or where you expect knocks. I think the marks would show.
