Paean Black

A chic red based black

This Georgian inspired red based black creates an intimate feel in super contemporary or bohemian homes, while adding a distinguished look to traditional exteriors. The perfect accent for all our reds and completing our range of blacks, Paean Black conjures up the shade of old leather hymnals and so is named after a song of praise.

Recommended Primer & Undercoat: Dark Tones

Complementary white: Joa's White

Back in 2010, we moved our entire range to an eco-friendly water base that’s low odour, low VOC and child-safe, becoming the first in the industry to do so. Easy to clean without harmful solvents, in tins that can be recycled again and again, our paints help to reduce the environmental impact of redecorating your home.

Every one of our paint colours is available in a range of durable interior and exterior paint finishes, each rigorously tested to ensure an exceptional depth of colour and long-lasting finish. For the very best results, we always recommend using a Farrow & Ball Primer & Undercoat – see above for the correct tone for this colour.

All Farrow & Ball finishes except Limewash contain isothiazolinones, which may produce an allergic reaction. Farrow & Ball Limewash contains calcium hydroxide which can cause severe damage in contact with skin or eyes. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lovely rich colour I bought this a month ago to paint kitchen cabinets - paired with calamine on the walls. It’s a bit scary going on as it’s VERY purple on the first coat, but deepens to a very blacky-purple. It’s important to say that it’s blacky-purple and not purpled-black!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolutely fabulous! This paint is a delight to use it goes on so easily. The colour is really unusual and lavish. I used it in our bathroom and a month later there are still no water marks - amazing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice colour, but more purple than expected Bought this one thinking that it looked pretty much as black as you can get, but actually it was much more purple than I had anticipated. It's a lovely colour, but just be warned; imagine an aubergine, and that's what you've got. As paints go in the range, this was a slightly thinner one, so had to put lots more coats on to get to the usual coverage.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing paint and richness of colour Bought this for an east facing front door, which was new hardwood and already primed. I didn’t prime with F&B dark tones primer, as it was pricey to get a whole pot for a smallish job. I’ve used their paints in emulsion and internal eggshell formats, but never a full gloss like this Paean Black. It wasn’t easy to paint with, but gloss never is and you’ll need an exceptionally fine brush to minimise brush marks. You also cannot put too much on at once or it will be harder to prevent over brushing, which shows the brush marks a lot. Once you get the hang of it though, it is amazing stuff and the colour has a depth to it that still gets me. It really does look different in different lights, much more purple in sunlight and blacker at other times. Very true to the description, I’d say. It’s unusual and striking too, perfectly complimenting our new, Victorian style front door with etched glass. Judge for horrible below!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful paint to work with This paint was a joy to work with. I used it with the recommended dark colour under coat. The colour was more of a dark purple than a red/purple black, and is more purple than the picture shows. However, I love the colour even if it was not quite what I expected (note to self, get a sample first), it covers beautifully and cleans up so easily, no smell. Highly recommended
