Paean Black

A chic red based black

This Georgian inspired red based black creates an intimate feel in super contemporary or bohemian homes, while adding a distinguished look to traditional exteriors. The perfect accent for all our reds and completing our range of blacks, Paean Black conjures up the shade of old leather hymnals and so is named after a song of praise.

Recommended Primer & Undercoat: Dark Tones

Complementary white: Joa's White

Product Information

Back in 2010, we moved our entire range to an eco-friendly water base that’s low odour, low VOC and child-safe, becoming the first in the industry to do so. Easy to clean without harmful solvents, in tins that can be recycled again and again, our paints help to reduce the environmental impact of redecorating your home.

Every one of our paint colours is available in a range of durable interior and exterior paint finishes, each rigorously tested to ensure an exceptional depth of colour and long-lasting finish. For the very best results, we always recommend using a Farrow & Ball Primer & Undercoat – see above for the correct tone for this colour.

All Farrow & Ball finishes except Limewash contain isothiazolinones, which may produce an allergic reaction. Farrow & Ball Limewash contains calcium hydroxide which can cause severe damage in contact with skin or eyes. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful paint to work with This paint was a joy to work with. I used it with the recommended dark colour under coat. The colour was more of a dark purple than a red/purple black, and is more purple than the picture shows. However, I love the colour even if it was not quite what I expected (note to self, get a sample first), it covers beautifully and cleans up so easily, no smell. Highly recommended

Rated 5 out of 5 by from F&B Addict The Farrow and Ball new colour, Paean Black is a fantastic, rich, deep colour. In my bedroom, which has a west and a north facing window, it looks like a deep purple/ aubergine colour. However, as the day goes on, it gets darker and darker. It is not as harsh as a pure black. I have it teamed up with Rectory Red and it goes really well as it is a red based black. As usual, Farrow and Ball paint goes on like cream with little or no odour. It also dries very quick. Highly recommended

Rated 5 out of 5 by from In love with Paean Ok, I’ve used and loved F&B for years, so it takes a special colour to get me up and changing schemes ! PAEAN BLACK did just that, my Hall is already ALL WHITE and these two get along great, I left the upper walls alone and just painted Paean below, one wall is Full WM Strawberry Thief and I couldn’t be happier with how the whole thing came together. Obviously painting Paean black over All white took some covering (three coats in all, the first looking similar to ribena! ) but as the intensity deepens the drama of Paean is amazing. The 2.5 litres went a long way as I never use a roller, always a brush and I had enough left over for a bedroom chimney breast. Love how it changes in different lights. A beautiful colour.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Stunning! Fell in love with this colour as soon as I took the lid off the tester pot. I have now painted my front room and love it even more! It has given a beautiful, deep depth of colour to the place.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Decadent opulence This is a fantastic colour. I've wanted to paint our north facing living room dark for a while after painting our bedroom in Railings earlier in the year. But I found railings too cold for a north facing room. This is the red based equivalent! It's a very sophisticated colour that changes from black during daylight to the deepest plum colour under artificial light at night. If you're thinking about going to the dark side, be brave and do it!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Colour but needed 4 coats I purchased the sample pot initially and then purchased a full sized from an independent stockist. I absolutely love the colour, it's rich and adapts perfectly to the changing light throughout the day. I have paired Sulking Room Pink which is a fantastic colour combo for a warm but moody atmosphere. I had been advised (by the stockist) that if I didn't use a primer I would likely need at least 3 coats if I was painting over white emulsion, we ended up needing 4 coats which was very time consuming and expensive. I would also avoid using masking tape, or at least remove it before the paint dries. We had to patch up a few areas after learning this the hard way.
