Elephant's Breath

No.229

A warm mid grey

This warm and contemporary grey is renowned for its characterful paint name, originally created by John Fowler, the notable English interior designer. Elephant's Breath reads as an uplifting mid grey with its hint of magenta, but can become almost lilac in the cooler light of west facing rooms. Try offsetting with Charleston Gray and London Clay for an invitingly earthy scheme with more intense accents, or pair with other Contemporary Neutrals such as the softer Strong White for a sense of neutrality and calm.

Recommended Primer & Undercoat: Mid Tones

Complementary white: Strong White

ECO-FRIENDLY AND CHILD-SAFE

Back in 2010, we moved our entire range to an eco-friendly water base that’s low odour, low VOC and child-safe, becoming the first in the industry to do so. Easy to clean without harmful solvents, in tins that can be recycled again and again, our paints help to reduce the environmental impact of redecorating your home.

QUALITY FINISHES

Every one of our 132 paint colours is available in a range of durable interior and exterior paint finishes, each rigorously tested to ensure an exceptional depth of colour and long-lasting finish. For the very best results, we always recommend using a Farrow & Ball Primer & Undercoat – see above for the correct tone for this colour.

Customer Reviews
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Elephants Breath I used elephants Breath with skimming stone and strong white.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Never again! Terribly disappointed with this paint. I thought I’d try it and see if buying ‘designer’ paint is worth the hype. Absolutely over rated in my opinion. Ok this particular shade is nice although the quality is rubbish. Even though we went over our walls twice, we still have loads of streaks and patches. We have redecorated our entire house when we renovated it 4 years ago so we have considerable experience when it comes to painting / decorating. I will certainly be sticking to dulex or crown in the future.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Superb quality I was reluctant to use a medium tone in my walls as the surfaces are not quite good but the paint spread beautifully and the hue is soft and warm very pleased.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful colour and finish This isn't the first time I've used Farrow & Ball estate emulsion as it is the most wonderful covering paint and it's durability is three times longer than the normal contenders. I am really pleased with my latest purchase, its exactly the taupe/grey I wanted and I even used Farrow & Ball undercover this time so it covered even more beautifully. I also love the fact that you can wipe marks off at any time with no loss of colour or staining. I even touched up my 8 year old paint in another room and the colour hadn't aged at all! Expensive but worth every penny.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Elephant Breath I must admit I am so disappointed with the quality of this paint. I wouldn’t mind paying £78 for quality but this is unacceptable. Took us to apply 3 coats of it and walls are still patchy. So annoying! The colour is lovely but quality really bad. Wouldn’t recommend it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from elephants breath walls, strong white ceiling Hi there. I will be painting a very large, open concept west facing room in elephant's breath. I am thinking of strong white on the ceiling. Is this a good idea (I've read they go beautifully together). I am also wondering about the crown molding and if it should be a separate colour again. we have white furnishings, pickled white floors and dark wood cabinets. Many thanks for any help given.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful External Colour We chose Elephants Breath as it complements the dark grey of our windows and door frames, as well as sitting comfortably against the warmer tones of our decking. We painted our rendered walls and exterior timber & we are very happy with the result.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good neutral tone for use with a brighter color Greys are excellent for grounding and calming brighter colors Elephants breath has violet undertones so it is very compatible with both a jet black and a bright red violet as an accent
