No.227

A classic taupe

Named to reflect our traditionally rooted history, Archive is a stronger, warmer version of Joa’s White. Perceived by many as a classic taupe, it has a slightly cleaner feel than Oxford Stone and creates a rich glow in any room. This colour works particularly well in dimly lit rooms if you want to create a cosy environment, but can be surprisingly orange in brighter spaces.

Recommended Primer & Undercoat: Mid Tones

Complementary white: Dimity

Archive is part of our archive collection so sample pots are not available, and orders cannot be returned.

Back in 2010, we moved our entire range to an eco-friendly water base that’s low odour, low VOC and child-safe, becoming the first in the industry to do so. Easy to clean without harmful solvents, in tins that can be recycled again and again, our paints help to reduce the environmental impact of redecorating your home.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lovely natural colour I bought this in Modern Emulsion and had no problems with application. It covered a previously pale blue wall in two coats with ease. It seems to be very adhesive but not difficult to apply. My husband did in fact try painting another wall with it, by first applying the F&B undercoat but the latter was so thick it was like applying polyfilla! However, the finished result in our hall is really natural and comfortable. I'm not sure why this colour is discontinued. It's really a kind of deep natural white and goes with most things, although admittedly, it might not go with a pop-art/ikea style interior!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One that shouldn’t be in the archive Perhaps it was inevitable that F&B would archive their archive? The very subtle warm red/rose tone in this creamy sienna beats hands down the ‘stone’ equivalents left in their range, Oxford Stone and Joas white.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Perfect Neutral The now inexplicably archived Archive is my go to paint for a neutral palette that is not a white or a cream. This taupe paint goes brilliantly with every colour I have put it with in my 16th century timber framed house. While largely used as the ceiling paint, the colour you see is dependent on the light type and levels in the room and boy does this paint soak in the light and reflect it back softly, for instance in my large north easterly facing sitting room I have used Archive on the infil ceiling along with Lichen on the walls, with the moody light levels in the room Archive is almost luminescent against the Lichen green, mimicking the colour of lime white paint, while on other ceilings throughout the house it will look more taupe such as in the adjoining south facing snug also in Lichen, what colour you see in the Archive estate emulsion is depending on the light levels and what colour it is used against if any, the stronger the light the more taupe your get. When used on the walls( EstEm) and panelling (Eggshell) as the primary paint colour as I have done in the rear entry hall and 1st floor hall the effect of this brands pigment quality is apparent, with the Archive surfaces absorbing light and softly glowing, when close to natural south facing light this paint is a soft taupe, further down the hall as the light changes it offers up that beautiful old lime white effect, when moved through to the front entry hall and first floor front hall this colour set against Red Earth walls (the closest match I could find to the original paint colour of a limed ox blood colour) appears to be both lime and taupe at the same time. This colour while a neutral is anything but plain and I will continue to use it for as long as I can. I can recomend use with Lichen, Red Earth, Sudbury Yellow, Sulking Room Pink, Setting Plaster.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Superb quality paint I have been using this brand for over 10 years and the quality can be relied upon. Especially good if you just want to refresh a room but without changing colour. The colour match on 227 Archive is perfect, 8 years after first application. It's also a very resistant finish and you can easily wipe off dirty marks leaving no traces.
