A deliciously deep purple
This deep and luxurious purple has a regal feel and derives its name from untreated animal hides. Much bluer in feel than the similarly strong Brinjal, Pelt can appear almost black in darker spaces and is particularly sensational in Full Gloss. Pair with Brassica to create a dark and moody scheme or soften with the feminine shades of Middleton Pink and Great White.
We’re dedicated to perfecting the art of paint. At our home in Dorset, we combine the finest ingredients, 75 years of experience and technical precision to help you create beautiful spaces that stay beautiful. Even in our colour rich paints, less than 8% of the tin is the colour. The other 92% is what creates the quality, depth and extraordinary response to light that transforms your home.
Paint is like coffee. The colour is the froth on the top, but it’s the quality of the rest of the cup that makes it taste good. – Richard Ball, Farrow & Ball Co-founder
We use twelve exclusive pigments, all specifically selected for their colour intensity. We take colour seriously, so naturally, we only accept the very best. By using these same pigments to make every colour in our palette, all our shades combine effortlessly, making it easy for you to put together a cohesive colour scheme.
Deeper, richer colours
Deeper, richer colours
Packed with pigment for an extraordinary response to every kind of light.
We add generous helpings of rich pigment to create our signature look – deep colours with complex undertones. The same space that feels bright and airy in morning sun, can feel cosy and intimate by evening. Our teams design each shade under every kind of light, so it will be perfectly balanced in every setting.
Extraordinary response to light
Extraordinary response to light
We spend months carefully crafting and testing each of our paint colours to make sure they share our signature extraordinary response to light. This beautiful reaction to changing light, like bringing out different undertones or shifting intensity, is what makes our paint so special.

Rich and creamyIt is the first time that I used F&B and I am in love. I painted my bathroom walls and ceiling in pelt after a colour consultation. The pant is like cream and the pigment is unbelievable. It glides on the wall and the slight sheen (modern emulsion) is perfect. I painted the walls with two layers of topcoat and the result is a deep and elegant purple. I love it!

Dead flat is not dead flatI ordered a sample of pelt (254) dead flat paint. I was sent estate emulsion and so I assumed that they were the same. I used the sample and had what I thought were very good results. So I went to the paint shop in Norwich where they mixed dead flat for me. Only when I got home and used it did I discover that dead flat and estate emulsion were not the same; in fact estate emulsion looked to be dead flat while dead flat has a slight gloss.
My wife and I preferred the finish of the estate emulsion, so I discarded the 7.5 litres of dead flat and bought a 5 litre tin of estate emulsion. That looked very good until anything touched it. If you wiped the wall gently with a duster, it removed the chalky finish and a glossy patch appeared. Repainting a large wall every month is impractical, let alone costly. So this colour paint is no use if it is illuminated by daylight at any time.

Modern Emulsion very different colour to testerThe Pelt tester (Estate Emulsion) was a great colour, so I went ahead and bought a 2.5 L tin of Modern Emulsion, as the paint was for a bathroom. However, the Modern Emulsion is a completely different colour - clearly visible when you have both tins open side-by-side, as well as when painted on the wall.
The Estate Emulsion tester was a very dark purple, with grey and reddish tones, like a much darker version of Brassica, which we've used before and love. In contrast, the Modern Emulsion is a very vivid purple, with blueish 'Ribena berry' tones and not what I wanted. The room is north-facing and quite dark, but the paint still looks really vivid on the walls, when I was hoping for muted/grey tones. Definitely not 'almost black', as the website suggests it looks in certain lights.
Such a shame as the tester pot and sample card were exactly the right colour. Don't know why F&B don't do testers in the different sheens/finishes, given how different they look on the wall. Very frustrating. Photos include a couple of the tester, painted onto a sample sheet of A3, to show the difference, although hard to capture on a phone. The tester looked the same on the wall as on the paper

Worst paint I've ever used in my lifeThis paint holds fingerprints. If you get anything on it, good luck wiping it off with anything not even water. It will leave a water stain. Painting it on the wall was a nightmare. Streaky. Splotchy. And yes, I used primer under coat. It still required two coats, which meant I had to buy another gallon of paint. I painted one singular room. You can see marks all up and down the walls from the paint roller. Unfortunately, I've used/opened the paint. So no refunds for me. Just $300+ gone to waste. I expect better performance given the price.
