March 26, 2026

Looking for a small project with big impact? Painting your front door is one of the simplest ways to refresh the outside of your home. In just a few steps, you can create a welcoming focal point, whether you opt for a subtle, classic shade or something bold and expressive.

Below, you’ll find everything you need to get started, from choosing the right finish to preparing and painting your door for a long-lasting result.

Choosing a Colour

Your front door is the perfect place to have a little fun with colour. You might choose something that complements your brickwork or exterior paint, or opt for a shade that creates an eye-catching contrast.

From fresh neutrals to deep, confident tones, our exterior finishes are available in a broad spectrum of Signature Palette and Archive shades, making it easy to find a colour that suits your preferences and your home’s character.

Whether you prefer something timeless or want to make a striking first impression, your front door is a wonderful opportunity to express your personal style.

Choosing the Right Finish

When painting a front door, the finish you choose can shape the overall look.

Exterior Eggshell offers a softly understated sheen that feels refined and elegant. It’s ideal for those who prefer a subtle finish that still delivers dependable outdoor protection.

Full Gloss, on the other hand, creates a striking high-shine effect. Its reflective finish brings confident colour and crisp definition to doors and architectural details.

A popular choice is Full Gloss on the door, with Exterior Eggshell in the same colour on neighbouring features, like the door frame, garage doors, window boxes and garden gates. But there are no hard and fast rules, so pick the sheen level you prefer.

Both finishes are designed to withstand the elements, offering durable protection against weather and UV exposure so your door stays looking its best season after season.

What you’ll need

  • Your chosen exterior paint finish (Exterior Eggshell for a subtle sheen or Full Gloss for a high-shine finish)
  • in the recommended tone for your paint colour – you’ll find this on the colour page for your chosen topcoat
  • Sandpaper
  • Masking tape
  • Paint brush – try our 2" Angled Brush

Step by Step: Painting Your Front Door

  1. Prepare the surface

Start by removing any hardware such as handles or door knockers. Lightly sand the door to create a smooth surface and make sure it’s clean and completely dry before painting.
If your door has glass panels, apply masking tape around the edges to keep them paint-free.
It’s best to begin early in the day so your paint has plenty of time to dry between coats.

  1. Prime the door

Apply a layer of Wood Primer & Undercoat using a 2-inch angled brush, working carefully across the door in sections.

For the most even finish, paint in the following order:

  • Panels
  • Central beam (also known as the muntin)
  • Top rail
  • Middle rail
  • Bottom rail
  • Side beams of the door (also known as the stiles)

Allow the primer to dry fully before moving on to your topcoat.

  1. Apply your colour

Using the same sequence, apply two coats of your chosen exterior paint, allowing each layer to dry thoroughly before applying the next.

Take your time and work methodically. The result will be a beautifully smooth, even finish that elevates the whole entrance to your home.
