A soft black
This soft black is one of the original Farrow & Ball colours - an uncomplicated name for a well loved classic. Off-Black is much more flattering to adjacent colours than stronger blacks because it feels so much milder in tone and has less of the underlying cool blue of Railings or Black Blue.
We’re dedicated to perfecting the art of paint. At our home in Dorset, we combine the finest ingredients, 75 years of experience and technical precision to help you create beautiful spaces that stay beautiful. Even in our colour rich paints, less than 8% of the tin is the colour. The other 92% is what creates the quality, depth and extraordinary response to light that transforms your home.
Paint is like coffee. The colour is the froth on the top, but it’s the quality of the rest of the cup that makes it taste good. – Richard Ball, Farrow & Ball Co-founder
We use twelve exclusive pigments, all specifically selected for their colour intensity. We take colour seriously, so naturally, we only accept the very best. By using these same pigments to make every colour in our palette, all our shades combine effortlessly, making it easy for you to put together a cohesive colour scheme.
Deeper, richer colours
Deeper, richer colours
Packed with pigment for an extraordinary response to every kind of light.
We add generous helpings of rich pigment to create our signature look – deep colours with complex undertones. The same space that feels bright and airy in morning sun, can feel cosy and intimate by evening. Our teams design each shade under every kind of light, so it will be perfectly balanced in every setting.
Extraordinary response to light
Extraordinary response to light
We spend months carefully crafting and testing each of our paint colours to make sure they share our signature extraordinary response to light. This beautiful reaction to changing light, like bringing out different undertones or shifting intensity, is what makes our paint so special.

Dead Flat colour drench, incredible finish. Some friends and family were sceptical about my plan to paint walls, ceiling and woodwork of our living room in Off Black but they've since been converted to The Dark Side. We chose to use Dead Flat on all surfaces and it really couldn't have been easier to use and beginning with the Dark Tones Primer really helped in the application and the finish. We love it 🖤

An elegant, cool blackThis is one of my very favourite colours from F&B, as it goes extremely well with other neutral and cool colours, like All White. We loved it so much on our wood railings using Estate Eggshell, that we decided to create a feature wall in our office using Dead Flat. It turned out amazing, the very slight cool blue/gray of Off Black worked perfectly on both the wall and wooden panels, elevating the room to an elegant end. As always, F&B never fails to amaze!

Off black - the perfect dramatic finish for stairsI recently chose a new stair runner to replace the previous one which had been damaged. I wanted to paint the stairs to a colour that would complement the stair runner and a friend suggested Off-black. I am delighted with the finished look. It’s the perfect dramatic colour but still has a soft and not too harsh feel to it. Just love it - so much so we decided to paint a piece of furniture in the hallway to match.

Used to paint cupboardsUsed this on some built-in cupboards. Beautiful colour and had a good level of sheen. One coat of primer and two of the modern egg-shell and the cupboards look like they were professionally wrapped.

To my surpriseI purchased a sample of this Off Black, never look at a color with a little swatch, I had decided not to use this color. When my husband painted the feature wall in our dining living space he picked up this color. It was finished when I returned home. The outcome is Gorgeous!

The perfect dark - not too harshDark with warmth. After a colour consultancy with Ross in Edinburgh, we’ve used off-black modern eggshell with school house white, mouses back and shaded white for our accents without the hallway/open plan kitchen living areas and really pleased with the colour and depth it provides without being overpowering

Great colour; difficult to useFantastic colour, which is the darkest of greys/ soft black. I chose Off-Black full gloss to repaint a front door that was already a matt black, as I felt that black was a little harsh. In the tin the colour looked a few shades lighter - a mid grey - but it dried to the exact almost black I was hoping for. I found the gloss a little tricky to paint with as it was surprisingly both sticky and drippy, and it was only possible to go over it with the paintbrush/roller for the first 30 seconds or so, after that it was already too gloopy to paint over. But once I knew that, subsequent coats were applied with more care first time. I undercoated and primed with the recommended Dark Tones primer and undercoat. The first couple of coats looked quite weird as the gloss has an unnaturally glassy finish that seems more like a varnish than a paint, and the colour and finish dried up quite patchy, but the third coat gave a more flawless finish I am pleased with. 4 stars rather than 5 because of the difficulty in painting, and because it required 3 coats over the primer and undercoat, not the recommended two.

Good but...I bought a sample in estate emulsion and tried it on a radiator and it turned into a dark flat grey which I loved. So I bought the correct finish for wood and iran -estate eggshell- to paint all radiators but the colour is different from the sample. It is a shiny deep black. The colour seems to change depending on the finish and surfaces so it is a risk to buy a big can if you dont try it first. Deludente as I bought 2.5 lt and paid a fortune.

Shiny peeks GHOSTED BY CUSTOMER SERVICE!!Colour is nice so I painted my whole bathroom this colour. After about 2 week the peeks of the wall started going shiny. When I reached out to the company they wouldn’t give me an answer why it was happening and eventually just ghosted me when I said I didn’t have the empty paint can anymore to send then the purchase code even though I didn’t want a replacement. WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE! I’ve reached out multiple times with zero response.

Modern Eggshell, very disappointingUsed off black modern eggshell to paint new staircase handrails and spindles over a dark grey undercoat. The paint is too thick to get a nice flat finish without showing brush strokes but yet has really poor coverage resulting in needing 3 coats which look like it has been applied too thickly. Not impressed at all, wish I’d used a different paint.

Amazingly Poor ProductThis is not a professional product. Weeks after applying the paint it still sticks to any object that is placed on it. This paint was spec'd by an interior designer with no sense of the real world. If you want to get a finish that is reminiscent of early generation latex paint, that never really seems to dry, and really just is tedious and poorly designed... this is the paint for you.
