Estate Emulsion
A warm neutral named after fabric originally used to make ladies' bustles, but which is now more commonly used for bedding.
Estate Emulsion is a classic choice for low-traffic interior walls and ceilings. Very matt with a distinctive, chalky finish, it minimises imperfections and creates a beautiful depth of colour.
Recommended Primer & Undercoat:White and Light Tones
Estate Emulsion is a very matte finish with a chalky 2% sheen.
Our deeper, richer colours are available in a range of finishes with different sheen levels. Sheen always affects how colour appears: the same shade in gloss can look very different in matte. That’s why we specifically adjust the formula for every finish to make sure the balance is exactly right and you get the colour you were expecting. Our colours and finishes are formulated together, so you simply can’t have one without the other.
Classic, chalky look
Classic, chalky look
A true classic, Estate Emulsion is a distinctive, chalky finish that minimises imperfections and creates beautiful depth of colour. Due to this unique texture, it’s best suited to less-busy areas without a lot of traffic.

100% water based
100% water based
We’re proud to have been the first in the industry to transition to a completely water based range back in 2010. As a result, all of our finishes, including our tough trim and floor paints, are made with a low-odour, low-VOC water base that scores A+ for indoor air quality.
Plus, our water based paint doesn’t discolour over time like solvent based paints can. So your spaces stay beautiful for longer.
Toy safe
Toy safe
This finish is independently tested and certified toy-safe in accordance with Safety of Toys Part 3: Migration of certain elements (EN 71-3:2019+A1:2021). That means you can and a splash of colour to toys, cribs and other surfaces little ones come into contact with. Our paints also have hardly any odour and don’t need any solvents to clean up, so you can breathe easy during application and beyond.

A perfect neutralDimity is the perfect neutral without being too cool or too warm looking. I wanted a change from the very cool hues of ammonite and this has definitely done the job. I teamed dimity dead flat emulsion on walls and woodwork with pointing dead flat emulsion on the ceiling. I love the finish of the dead flat paint will use this in future, covered the radiator beautifully.

a bright yet cozy creamA lovely soft cream that is perfect in north facing rooms. It has enough contrast with white trim, and feels a little cozy, but is still light and bright. I've used in in multiple rooms in two houses now. This was my first time trying Dead Flat finish and so far I like it. Hoping it holds up better over time than the Modern Emulsion.

Susceptible to Colour ShiftWe bought Dimity in Dead Flat for our Lounge and Dining Room. Whilst I absolutely love the colour in our lounge which doesn't get a lot of changes in light throughout the day, I really don't like the colour in our sunny dining room as it looks yellow rather than a neutral taupe. I did try a sample on several walls and felt happy as it didn't show any signs of a yellow tone. It is natural for some colours to shift greatly depending on the time of day and sun levels and it seems this colour is particularly susceptible to this. I don't like yellow on the walls so the dining room will be repainted. It is obviously a personal preference so I would still recommend the colour. In the shade, it has a beautiful peach undertone, but in the sun it is a pastel yellow. Just be aware of this.

Good Paint, Bad Tin!Great paint but unfortunately you gave me a damaged tin where the base is bowed and won't sit steadily. Very annoying as it was a 5 litre tin of Dead Flat that should last me for several rooms, especially when it costs over a £100.

Warmer than expected, needed to changeThere are never any issues in terms of quality with F&B, so this mixed review is purely subjective. We bought Diminity in Estate Eggshell for the woodwork in the room - doors, skirtings, picture rail. This was to go with walls painted in Jitney, as the F&B site suggested that diminity was the complimentary white. Unfortunately we found it a lot warmer than expected, and particularly in the evenings it seemed to make the woodwork look a little muddy and in need of a repaint! So that's exactly what we did, this time opting for Pointing, which is much lighter and 'cleaner', providing more contrast with the walls.
Diminity not for us I'm afraid, it might be better suited to walls, certainly for our taste

Modern emulsion doesn't match testerWe bought tester pots of London Stone, Oxford Stone, and Dimity. They only come in estate emulsion but the Dimity was the one we liked for our main bedroom. We decided that Modern Emulsion was the finish we wanted. Unfortunately, the colour does not match the tester pot at all. I can't believe that the difference in sheen would account for that much difference. I don't know if our tester pot was bad but we're not particularly happy. We used Eddy in Modern Emulsion for our smallest bedroom and the colour much more closely matches the tester pot. We haven't yet tested our other paint colours.
Quality of the paint itself is good but the tester pot gave us an entirely misleading idea of how the colour would be. Why not offer tester pots in other finishes?
