In this instalment of our new series, we’re shining the spotlight on Setting Plaster. A firm Farrow & Ball favourite, this dusty pink is designed to mimic the look of unpainted walls. An unusual source of inspiration perhaps but for Joa Studholme — the creator of this shade — it was love at first sight.
Joa explains the story behind Setting Plaster: ‘This colour came around because I had a very, very small TV room, which had been re-plastered. My husband and I looked at each other and said “gosh, let's keep it that way it’s so beautiful!”. By the time we came home again, a helpful painter had whitewashed it. So, I sat down that night and recreated this colour.
‘Any room painted in this colour somehow feels like it's giving you a great big hug. It really embraces you. It's perfect in north facing rooms because it warms it up. It has a little yellow undertone in the pink, so it always feels very, very soft.’
Warm Scheme
‘Very often I’d combine Setting Plaster with Dead Salmon, perhaps Dead Salmon below a dado rail with Setting Plaster above. Both have a wonderful warmth to them. And I can never resist using Tanner’s Brown as a trim colour. It just is the most chic thing on earth.’
Lighter Scheme
‘For a much lighter scheme, I like Setting Plaster on the walls with a Pink Ground ceiling. It’s very, very pretty and they go perfectly together. Perhaps, you could then make it a bit more interesting with Card Room Green on the trim.’
