A true black

Pitch Black is as pure a black as you can get and is strong and uncomplicated in all lights. Named after the dark sticky residue of coal tar often used in roofing, this true black has an unsurpassable depth and almost velvet quality. As with All White at the other end of our colour palette, it is easy to understand and indispensable for ironwork, woodwork or even walls if you are feeling daring!

Key features

The finest ingredients

The finest ingredients

We’re dedicated to perfecting the art of paint. At our home in Dorset, we combine the finest ingredients, 75 years of experience and technical precision to help you create beautiful spaces that stay beautiful. Even in our colour rich paints, less than 8% of the tin is the colour. The other 92% is what creates the quality, depth and extraordinary response to light that transforms your home.

Paint is like coffee. The colour is the froth on the top, but it’s the quality of the rest of the cup that makes it taste good.
– Richard Ball, Farrow & Ball Co-founder

We use twelve exclusive pigments, all specifically selected for their colour intensity. We take colour seriously, so naturally, we only accept the very best. By using these same pigments to make every colour in our palette, all our shades combine effortlessly, making it easy for you to put together a cohesive colour scheme.

Deeper, richer colours

Deeper, richer colours

Packed with pigment for an extraordinary response to every kind of light.

We add generous helpings of rich pigment to create our signature look – deep colours with complex undertones. The same space that feels bright and airy in morning sun, can feel cosy and intimate by evening. Our teams design each shade under every kind of light, so it will be perfectly balanced in every setting.

Extraordinary response to light

Extraordinary response to light

We spend months carefully crafting and testing each of our paint colours to make sure they share our signature extraordinary response to light. This beautiful reaction to changing light, like bringing out different undertones or shifting intensity, is what makes our paint so special.

Interior and exterior finishes

Interior and exterior finishes

From walls, floors and furniture to radiators, skirtings and sheds, our range of paint finishes can help you transform almost any surface in your home (and outside it, too).

Dark Tones

When it comes to using dark colours, the deeper the better. So, for an irresistibly inviting finished look, pair darker shades with our Dark Tones Primer & Undercoat. Based on the colour of Down Pipe, combining this primer with your topcoat creates an unrivalled richness and makes quite the statement.

Made with the same natural ingredients and pigments as our topcoats, our Primer & Undercoat is the crucial foundation for creating a rich, even and longer lasting finish.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Cellar to speakeasy We’ve recently done up a worn looking cellar in our Victorian terrace to a useable space using pitch black in full gloss and hague blue in estate emulsion and are absolutely thrilled with the results! Full gloss should ensure the wooden beams don’t chip and reflects light in the room perfectly, giving the cosy speakeasy feel we were after, would highly recommend!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Should I paint my staircase black? I used pitch black dead flat. To paint a staircase, I left the handrail and posts in their teak finish until I tested hand marks on the paint. 2 days later I painted the handrail & posts / and I use the rail several times a day. I am 100% happy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect Pitch Black Love the depth of the black with absolutely no shine ! I thought the texture being so mat, would show up scuff or finger marks - we painted are old front door with its lots of imperfections and somehow with it being so flat it’s kinda hidden them !! With lovely new door accessories the front door has been given a new lease of life and looks very smart and stylish !

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved using this paint! I painted a wooden side table in this colour and I am so pleased I did. I used a black primer, and really took my time but the paint went on like a dream, used two coats (but could have gotten away with one). No paint odours, which was really nice because I painted this in my small living room.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from OMG! Best paint ever A neighbour recommended your number 256 to paint the railing of our stairs as we were looking for a nice black paint to update them. After using other brands I couldn't imagine the difference when I used yours! What a wonderful experience. My stairs look brand new, the new texture of the wood is just amazing and it doesn't really have any smell while you are painting. It has been such a change that I decided to update the radiators too. Oh boy, your paint is not cheap, but you get exceptional quality for what you pay. You have gained a forever customer here ;)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The perfect black Bought this in an eggshell finish for woodwork and doors. Usual F&B quality and the colour is the right shade of black - for anyone who has searched for the right shade of black, you will know what I mean

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not worth the money Very average product, would take minimum of three coats to cover

Rated 2 out of 5 by from A pity This paint went on beautifully as Farrow and Ball products always do. However I was disappointed with the high sheen finish when it had dried. It's Estate Eggshell with a 20% gloss level but it's much shinier than that. I had to paint over it with a Dulux Eggshell product to achieve the finish I wanted. A shame.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Eternal drying time I used Pitch Black Estate Eggshell to paint some fitted shelves. I used the F&B dark tones primer and followed all the instructions. This was three weeks ago. Still tacky to the touch and can't actually put anything on the shelves for fear of ruining the paint job or the item itself. Finishing off the job has become impossible to do without leaving permanent prints on the paintwork, I am aware that darker tones take longer to cure and i've been pretty patient, but three weeks? Lovely colour though. I'd give it 5 stars for the colour but only 1 for practical useability. Looks like plenty of people didn't have the same problem, so maybe i got a dodgy tin. Frustrating!
