Choosing Colours: Consider The Big Picture

Walls:
andNaturally, paint is our priority. But even we know it’s not the whole picture. Everything in your space helps create the feeling you want — from the furniture to the architecture and even the flooring. Read our guide about choosing colours for your space as a whole.
Architecture
Take a step back and look at the space from floor to ceiling. Do you have a dado rail or picture rail? Are there features like mouldings, cornices or a ceiling rose? These are all features you might want to highlight or incorporate into your design.

Consider the textures and colours in your room. Natural materials, like wood and linen, work wonderfully with sandy neutrals or greens, while industrial materials, like metal and concrete, may work better with crisper tones — our Architectural Neutrals are a good place to start. If you have more luxurious tastes, with velvet, gold and marble accents, you might prefer richer, deeper shades.

Your floor is arguably one of the most cumbersome parts of a room to change. So, you may want to choose colours that complement your existing flooring. Wood, concrete, stone and tile all have a different feel that you may want to accentuate or counteract with your colour scheme.

One way to create a cohesive feel is to pick an item you love and build your scheme around it. For example, both our Creative Director Charlotte and our Brand Ambassador Patrick have created schemes centred on a fabric. Take colours from the item throughout the rest of the room or pick complementary shades.
