Preparation, preparation, preparation

If you want your endeavours to last, preparation is key. Firstly, make sure your furniture is suitable for painting, for example, some powder-coated or melamine pieces may not respond well. Then prepare and prime. For detailed information on setting yourself up for success, take a look at the Farrow & Ball Product Advice Sheets.

The world is your oyster

Half the fun of upcycling is finding the beauty in items that need love. A considered lick of paint can be truly transformative — with some creative taping, even the most aesthetically lack-lustre table can become a work of art to be proud of.

Start small

Ease in gently with a lamp, mirror or side table, rather than going straight to a gigantic wardrobe. This way, you’ve set yourself a challenge you can easily finish and feel proud of.

Look beyond imperfections

Scratches can be sorted and they add character, so look beyond imperfections. It’s about finding something that really speaks to you.

Choose styles you love

Rather than thinking about what you ‘should’ upcycle, choose furniture you love and suits your space. Paint can add personality to lots of different styles from traditional farmhouse to mid-century and even art deco.

Consider your space

Before you jump in, think about where you want to put the furniture. Consider the size and the shape you’re working with to find the perfect piece.
