A Calming Country Retreat with Colour Consultancy

A Calming Country Retreat with Colour Consultancy

2 September 2024

Caroline Lossberg has lived in cities all over the world, from Paris to Sydney to New York. Her career as a model has seen her constantly travelling since she was 14 years old. So, it’s no surprise she’s been seeking sanctuary at her countryside cottage just outside of Berlin. “I’m very grateful that we have this cottage as a retreat,” Caroline says, “as a get away from our busy daily lives, from work and from our life in the city.”

As she was creating her hideaway, Caroline realised she needed a little help. There was only one place to turn: our Colour Consultants. With unrivalled understanding of colour, finish and light, our experts can capture the exact mood, look and feel you want. In Caroline’s case, that was complete calm.

Caroline explains: “When we did the colour consultancy, we were very open because the Consultants know what they do. They work with the colours all the time and know how they can bring the room to life. We did hesitate in some rooms with the bolder colours but we trusted the process and we’re very happy that we did.

“The first thing we did when everything was still empty, was to discuss the feeling we want to reach, the mood we want to create. We settled on some beautiful colours and they suggested some colours we wouldn’t choose normally, which all blend beautifully and set the mood for the cottage we wanted to create.”

Kitchen & Living Room

The transformation began in the biggest and most important room of the house — the kitchen and living room. “This is where we eat, we sit by the fireplace, we play, we argue, we laugh.” says Caroline. “This is basically where life happens.”

Walls: Shadow White No.282 | Chimney Breast:  Inchyra Blue No.289

The Consultant chose a purposefully neutral scheme of Shadow White and Hardwick White with accents of Inchrya Blue for two reasons. Firstly, the colours chosen for here flow out across the rest of the home, creating a harmonious sense of ease, so they had to be versatile. Secondly, they act as a backdrop to allow the view Caroline wanted to focus on to draw the eye, as she explains:

“When we had the colour consultancy, we decided to involve nature from outside. We have these beautiful big windows and doors where you can see the trees and the garden. We wanted to include this through the whole cottage.”

Primary Bedroom

Walls & Ceiling: Eddy No.301

In the bedroom, or “sleeping corner” as Caroline lovingly calls it, our Colour Consultant choose another soft shade reminiscent of nature: Eddy . This gentle green is inherently relaxing, making it an ideal choice for this sleep space that looks out into the tree canopy.

Caroline says: “What I really like about Eddy in this space, is how, like every colour from Farrow & Ball, the light and the time of day changes how it looks and how it feels.”

Children’s Room

Walls & Ceiling: Kittiwake No. 307

Walls & Ceiling: Kittiwake No. 307 | Cupboards & Stairs: Beverly No.310

This room is the ultimate example of why colour consultancy can help you create a space you love, which you may never have considered on your own. As Caroline explains:

“I have to say, my favourite room say is the kids’ room. Sometimes I wish to be a kid there again, so I’m very happy and grateful that my kids can experience this childhood dream. We did have a moment in the room when we saw the colour for the first time and we didn’t know if we really loved it. But once we saw it with the bed and all the accessories, it all made sense.”

As well as choosing colours that suit the mood of a space, in this case a magical space where elves and fairies often visit for bedtime stories, our Colour Consultants also consider the best finish. This Kittiwake and Beverly bedroom is painted floor-to-ceiling in our impressively durable Dead Flat® . Scrubbable and scuff-resistant, the room is safe from sticky fingers, spills and stains.

Bathroom

If we’ve said it once, we’ve said it one hundred times: bathrooms are ideal places to experiment. Even if you enjoy extra-long soaks in the bath, you don’t spend a lot of time in this space so you can afford to be a little braver than you might be elsewhere. That’s exactly what our Colour Consultant encouraged Caroline to do with this bold, Brinjal bathroom.

Ceiling & Trim: Potted Shrimp No.9906 | Wall & Radiator: Brinjal No.222

“I was a bit unsure of the colour in the beginning” Caroline says, “but I’m really happy we did it. We also covered this heater, so it’s basically camouflage. We paired the Brinjal colour with this beautiful Potted Shrimp . I think it’s a great combination.”
