Exterior Eggshell

This relaxing green grey takes its inspiration from French decoration, particularly wallpapers used in the 19th century.

Exterior Eggshell brings long-lasting, rich colour to exterior wood and metal. The low sheen finish remains flexible once dry, protecting wood and metal surfaces through changing weather, while preservatives help prevent the growth of algae and fungi. The resin-rich formula resists flaking, peeling, and fading for up to six years.

Key features

Low sheen

Low sheen

The soft, low sheen satin finish of our Exterior Eggshell brings long-lasting colour to outdoor spaces. 20% sheen.

Our deeper, richer colours are available in a range of finishes with different sheen levels. Sheen always affects how colour appears: the same shade in gloss can look very different in matt. That’s why we specifically adjust the formula for every finish to make sure the balance is exactly right and you get the colour you were expecting. Our colours and finishes are formulated together, so you simply can’t have one without the other.

For exterior wood and metal

For exterior wood and metal

Suitable for exterior wood and metal, our Exterior Eggshell brings long-lasting colour to outdoor spaces with a finish that remains flexible once dry, protecting wood and metal surfaces through changing weather. Added preservatives help to prevent the growth of algae and fungi, and the resin-rich formula resists flaking, peeling, and fading for up to six years.

From walls, floors and furniture to radiators, skirtings and sheds, our range of paint finishes can help you transform almost any surface in your home (and outside it, too). Browse our full selection of finishes to find the perfect paint for your project.

Weather resistant and flexible

Weather resistant and flexible

This finish has been carefully designed to be water resistant and stay flexible once dry, protecting wood and metal surfaces through changing weather. At the same time, it also offers the highest level of water vapour permeability to allow them to breathe. So, you can transform your exterior with colour that lasts.

Protected from fungi and algae

Our expert chemists have formulated Exterior Eggshell with added protection against fungi and algae, so your outdoor spaces stay looking their best.

100% water based

100% water based

We’re proud to have been the first in the industry to transition to a completely water based range back in 2010. As a result, all of our finishes, including our tough trim and floor paints, are made with a low-odour, low-VOC water base that scores A+ for indoor air quality.

Plus, our water based paint doesn’t discolour over time like solvent based paints can. So your spaces stay beautiful for longer.

Toy safe

Toy safe

This finish is independently tested and certified toy-safe in accordance with Safety of Toys Part 3: Migration of certain elements (EN 71-3:2019+A1:2021). That means you can and a splash of colour to toys, cribs and other surfaces little ones come into contact with. Our paints also have hardly any odour and don’t need any solvents to clean up, so you can breathe easy during application and beyond.

Green Paint Schemes

Rated 5 out of 5 by from French Grey Joy I’ve been an avid user of F&B paints for the last few years and proud to say most of my home is adorned in this wonderful paint. So, slightly bias, but always honest in my opinions and my recent use of French Grey in estate emulsion in a guest bedroom, is no different. The room is south facing so has all the light available throughout most of the day, and with a sunny April day looks very much on the green side, but on a typical British overcast day, the greyer tones come through, adding a softer, more demure feel to the room. It’s a very restful shade and the quality of the paint was excellent

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Delicious and delightful This paint is my go-to for quality coverage and enjoyable, healthy painting. The colors are rich and subtle. My two favorites thus far are French Gray and Wimborne White. Delicious and delightful.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful color! You know a brand is good when people are trying to find dupes. Just spend the extra money because the quality is worth it! Our contractor who has done many different paint colors and brands said Farrow and Ball was one of his top favorites.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect for our dining room We tried several different colours - some that seemed like they would be very similar to French Gray but in reality they did not look anywhere near as nice when we tested them. We are delighted with the result - it has completely transformed the dated dining room in our new house.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Happy Customer Love the beautiful color and quality of the paint. I stirred the paint but there was no separation. Very pleased.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great paint to apply. I’ve used F&B French grey before and it’s a great paint when applied just don’t cut corners and stick to F&B advice on how to apply. Give all prep work ie fillers, plasters & calking to fully dry before you apply your expensive paint and you won’t have to touch it again for several years to come.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Always fresh Such a wonderful colour. We have used it on the outside woodwork on our stone farmhouse. I never tire of looking at it. We are always asked which colour it is!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Thankful! It took me an eon to choose a color my family would agree upon. This color works nicely in our country cottage, and has subtle changes throughout the day moving from light green to blue green— kind of has a grey tone—But, in the lower light in our SW facing family room, it always stays green. We used Dead Flat— this is an old house, and the paint did an excellent job muting the imperfections. We used Blackened on the ceiling— as I had seen done in an English flat shown in the inspiration pictures. The Blackened, hits blue at times, but otherwise reads whitish. It was a good call. In the inspiration photo they use mahogany on door frames which will eventually become the color of the built in cabinet in the room. I’m thankful it worked out. Painter said it was extremely high quality paint.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Calming colour I’d describe it as pale Khaki. Definitely more green than grey. Nice, easy paint to work with. I did 2 coats of a Johnstone’s primer and 3 coats of French Gray.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A green kitchen Our kitchen renovation involves 3 (and possibly 4) F&B colors, and I could not be happier with my choices. The palette is warm, harmonious, and easy to live with. So glad that Stirabout arrived just in time! Rated 5 out of 5 by from French Grey for bedroom I have just had my master bedroom painted in French Grey. We wanted it to blend with the view of the trees outside the window. I love it. Such a calming sophisticated colour. Great for a bedroom.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful French gray I have a gray living room and I wanted a pop of colour that didn't clash and would bring a cosy, modern feeling to the room. I definitely found this with the French gray. I have yound children so I bought the modern emulsion version.
Date published: 2022-10-06
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Gorgeous but 3 coats needed Colours is beautiful but coverage isn’t great. It’ll take 3 coats.
Date published: 2024-03-17
Rated 4 out of 5 by from French Grey We've used French grey in both our dining room and kitchen. The colour is beautiful and calming. We've used it on the walls with lime white on the cabinetry in the kitchen and it has a beautiful country feel. We have also used it with a feature wall of de nimes and it looks contemporary and so cosy. The modern eggshell is great but the estate emulsion I must admit does scratch off rather easily so I would use modern emulsion if like us have a busy household. Hope that helps.
