A rich, dark blue

Inspired by midnight skies, this spiritual colour is named after the term Homer used to describe the sea. Our richest blue, it’s the perfect addition to our strong blue family, being more sophisticated than Stiffkey Blue and more upbeat than Hague Blue. In low-light, Wine Dark becomes even richer, making it particularly glamorous in candlelight and perfect for creating intimate spaces.

Complementary white: Ammonite

Key features

The finest ingredients

The finest ingredients

We’re dedicated to perfecting the art of paint. At our home in Dorset, we combine the finest ingredients, 75 years of experience and technical precision to help you create beautiful spaces that stay beautiful. Even in our colour rich paints, less than 8% of the tin is the colour. The other 92% is what creates the quality, depth and extraordinary response to light that transforms your home.

Paint is like coffee. The colour is the froth on the top, but it’s the quality of the rest of the cup that makes it taste good.
– Richard Ball, Farrow & Ball Co-founder

We use twelve exclusive pigments, all specifically selected for their colour intensity. We take colour seriously, so naturally, we only accept the very best. By using these same pigments to make every colour in our palette, all our shades combine effortlessly, making it easy for you to put together a cohesive colour scheme.

Deeper, richer colours

Deeper, richer colours

Packed with pigment for an extraordinary response to every kind of light.

We add generous helpings of rich pigment to create our signature look – deep colours with complex undertones. The same space that feels bright and airy in morning sun, can feel cosy and intimate by evening. Our teams design each shade under every kind of light, so it will be perfectly balanced in every setting.

Extraordinary response to light

Extraordinary response to light

We spend months carefully crafting and testing each of our paint colours to make sure they share our signature extraordinary response to light. This beautiful reaction to changing light, like bringing out different undertones or shifting intensity, is what makes our paint so special.

Interior and exterior finishes

Interior and exterior finishes

From walls, floors and furniture to radiators, skirtings and sheds, our range of paint finishes can help you transform almost any surface in your home (and outside it, too).

Our comprehensive range is comprised of paint finishes that not only look beautiful, but offer different practical benefits. Dark Tones

When it comes to using dark colours, the deeper the better. So, for an irresistibly inviting finished look, pair darker shades with our Dark Tones Primer & Undercoat. Based on the colour of Down Pipe, combining this primer with your topcoat creates an unrivalled richness and makes quite the statement.

Made with the same natural ingredients and pigments as our topcoats, our Primer & Undercoat is the crucial foundation for creating a rich, even and longer lasting finish.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best paint Although I didn’t go for wine dark in the end I chose another Farrow and Ball paint, the colour wasn’t quite what I wanted but a lovely colour moon the less! The paint goes on really well with a gorgeous Matt finish!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just the color I’ve been searching for! We purchased this several months ago - we updated the paint colors in our kitchen/laundry. Amazing color! We used it on the wood trim and doors. Great coverage and sheen!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lovely Tone to this paint Used for fireplace wall in our old Mill House and it sets period fireplace off beautifully. Loads of people have commented on the paint and the richness and depth this has. Absolutely love this.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wine Dark in dead flat is dead amazing - Love the new dead flat! I use my home office to create a lot of video, and this colour and finish are perfect for achieving warm skin tones and a nice, even background.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from love the purple undertone I painted a small bathroom in Elephant's Breath with trim in Skimming Stone. However, the Skimming Stone on the baseboard looked really at odds with my green-gray floor tile -- the undertones were just different enough to make your eye twitch. I immediately went to the F&B store to get something to separate the two colors and ended up with Wine Dark. Absolutely love how it picks up the purple undertone in Elephant's Breath and the bonus was that it harmonizes beautifully with the green-blue shower tile too. Rich indigo with a distinctly purple undertone that goes well with the violet-grays.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Paint, Delicious Shade As ever a joy to apply, no significant odour and good coverage. I applied to a previously white bathroom using dark tone’s undercoat then 2 coats largely roller applied and this was perfect. It doesn’t splatter or run and washes out from brushes and rollers with great easy and no more chemicals than washing up liquid. It’s a classic deep blue shade but did conjure a vision of a glass of Merlot throughout application 😀. Our property is a modern built CoE Rectory in atrocious condition of poor quality modern materials. If it can transform a room here to tolerable imagine it in a reasonable quality home.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful Wine Dark After lots of deliberation we chose this new blue and so glad we waited for Wine Dark to come along. It’s a wonderful rich blue that looks a purple blue in some lights, grey blue at other times or the beautiful blue it is.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fabulous colour We decided to paint our study in a dark blue colour. It was going to be Hague Blue but then I saw Wine Dark. So glad I chose this colour - it’s stunning. We used Wevet on the ceiling and Ammonite on the skirting boards/trims.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very warm and excellent finish The colour is very warm and the finish excellent although it took three coats to cover and the texture seemed slightly “oily” when applying unlike the contrasting colour we bought in same paint which covered in two coats. I would recommend this colour for feature wall.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Disappointed with the colour We bought this for our front door. Looking for a dark blue like the advertised pictures. It has gone on in purple! Not what we wanted at all. However, good quality paint.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from First and last time with Dead Flat paint We are renovating our early Victorian house and currently painting our large lounge with Pointing on the ceiling, cornice, skirting, shutters and windows and Wine Dark from cornice to skirting including picture rail. The room has been newly plastered and has had its required misting coat. We decided to use Dead Flat so that we could use the same paint on the picture rail. Our experience is very disappointing. The paint doesn’t easily spread so doesn’t go far. It’s still patchy after 2 coats so had to order another 2.5l. We have used another brand of dark coloured premium paint in our bedroom (same size as lounge) and this needed just 2 coats and used around 3.5l of paint. This has been an expensive mistake in time and money. We won’t be in a hurry to use Farrow & Ball again. The 2 stars are for the colour which is beautiful but not worth the cost and hassle factor.
