A traditional mid yellow

This soft mid yellow takes its name from the staircase at Sudbury Hall, where renowned colourist John Fowler used this shade to such great effect. Sudbury Yellow is particularly responsive to changes in light, reading as cleaner and brighter in well lit rooms or softening in dimly lit spaces alongside a stronger contrast like New White.

The finest ingredients

The finest ingredients

We’re dedicated to perfecting the art of paint. At our home in Dorset, we combine the finest ingredients, 75 years of experience and technical precision to help you create beautiful spaces that stay beautiful. Even in our colour rich paints, less than 8% of the tin is the colour. The other 92% is what creates the quality, depth and extraordinary response to light that transforms your home.

Paint is like coffee. The colour is the froth on the top, but it’s the quality of the rest of the cup that makes it taste good.
– Richard Ball, Farrow & Ball Co-founder

We use twelve exclusive pigments, all specifically selected for their colour intensity. We take colour seriously, so naturally, we only accept the very best. By using these same pigments to make every colour in our palette, all our shades combine effortlessly, making it easy for you to put together a cohesive colour scheme.

Deeper, richer colours

Deeper, richer colours

Packed with pigment for an extraordinary response to every kind of light.

We add generous helpings of rich pigment to create our signature look – deep colours with complex undertones. The same space that feels bright and airy in morning sun, can feel cosy and intimate by evening. Our teams design each shade under every kind of light, so it will be perfectly balanced in every setting.

Extraordinary response to light

Extraordinary response to light

We spend months carefully crafting and testing each of our paint colours to make sure they share our signature extraordinary response to light. This beautiful reaction to changing light, like bringing out different undertones or shifting intensity, is what makes our paint so special.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful in all lights I previously painted my north-facing study in this shade and it transformed what had been a beautiful but aesthetically chilly space into one of inviting warmth. Recently, I experimented with red hues in sample pots for the walls in my bedroom. All were lovely but none quite worked and so, I ended up having the walls painted in Sudbury Yellow. This paint is truly versatile and responds wonderfully to changes in light as the day/night wears on. My bedroom has a very high ceiling, was formerly a pale gold (not F & B) which hadn’t worn well and is south-facing. It has been transformed and a huge plus in having chosen it is that my paintings now look wonderfully defined. Wonderful paint (only needed one coat), gorgeous shade!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great color Such a beautiful color. Lighter than India Yellow, but gives a warm glow in the same way. It goes on like a dream. Our stained wood furniture looks amazing with it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lovely rich yellow, adding some much needed warm. I am using this paint as an accent colour to add some richness to a very dark hallway. So far the paint has given me an excellent coverage and the colour changes depending on how the light hits it. Looking very good so far.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sudbury Yellow is an elegant ochre It’s just right, not too orangey, not too green. I used it for one wall behind a mid century low cabinet that we use to put the telly on, in our south facing kitchen diner. It looks warm, elegant and inviting. We used the dead flat finish, which has a good, even coverage.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Gorgeous colour! A gorgeous colour! I had my north-facing study painted and was delighted by the transformation from a chilly off-white … It is elegant and changes with the light. I am so pleased and the paint itself was apparently a dream to work with.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from An unexpected revelation The colour gives the look of stateliness that I was not quite expecting. It is I have walked into a room of a well maintained country mansion. Have been really overwhelmed by the beauty and majesty of this colour.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fabulous colour I wanted to chose a colour for the kitchen. A colour that inspired and uplifted. This does both.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sudbury Yellow used in a bedroom An excellent colour for adding warmth to a room, noting that the tone is darker than most yellows. Coverage is very good, having only applied one coat.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from What a colour I painted this as a feature wall in my lounge first time I used yellow I have never used such brilliant paint I will never use any other paint . I especially like the chalky finish now going to put this on one wall in my kitchen luv luv it. Want to do my whole house with farrow and ball now 10/10

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Small hallway made fabulous Small hallway painted in Sudbury yellow modern emulsion. Lovely rich, warm & welcoming colour. I used the modern emulsion as because it’s the hallway, it will need to be harder wearing , and may need to be wiped down & cleaned from time to time. It clearly looks like this will be possible as it is not as flatt Matt as the estate emulsion, but still very happy with end result, especially as it will last longer .

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Lovely color, but prone to scuffing I really like the color, and my painter says F&B is a pleasure to apply. However, I find myself constantly painting over scuff marks in order to keep up appearances. I live alone with a well-behaved dog. If you have kids, you definitely should choose another paint with a scrubbable finish.
