A soft black with blue undertones

More blue than black, Railings is a softer alternative to black which is particularly suited to the ironwork it takes its name from. When used in Full Gloss on front doors it creates a handsome and commanding entrance, but becomes much more relaxed in feel in our Estate Eggshell finish. The bluer undertones of this dark hue transform rooms into dramatic and enveloping interior spaces.

The finest ingredients

The finest ingredients

We’re dedicated to perfecting the art of paint. At our home in Dorset, we combine the finest ingredients, 75 years of experience and technical precision to help you create beautiful spaces that stay beautiful. Even in our colour rich paints, less than 8% of the tin is the colour. The other 92% is what creates the quality, depth and extraordinary response to light that transforms your home.

Paint is like coffee. The colour is the froth on the top, but it’s the quality of the rest of the cup that makes it taste good.
– Richard Ball, Farrow & Ball Co-founder

We use twelve exclusive pigments, all specifically selected for their colour intensity. We take colour seriously, so naturally, we only accept the very best. By using these same pigments to make every colour in our palette, all our shades combine effortlessly, making it easy for you to put together a cohesive colour scheme.

Deeper, richer colours

Deeper, richer colours

Packed with pigment for an extraordinary response to every kind of light.

We add generous helpings of rich pigment to create our signature look – deep colours with complex undertones. The same space that feels bright and airy in morning sun, can feel cosy and intimate by evening. Our teams design each shade under every kind of light, so it will be perfectly balanced in every setting.

Extraordinary response to light

Extraordinary response to light

We spend months carefully crafting and testing each of our paint colours to make sure they share our signature extraordinary response to light. This beautiful reaction to changing light, like bringing out different undertones or shifting intensity, is what makes our paint so special.

Dark Tones

When it comes to using dark colours, the deeper the better. So, for an irresistibly inviting finished look, pair darker shades with our Dark Tones Primer & Undercoat. Based on the colour of Down Pipe, combining this primer with your topcoat creates an unrivalled richness and makes quite the statement.

Made with the same natural ingredients and pigments as our topcoats, our Primer & Undercoat is the crucial foundation for creating a rich, even and longer lasting finish.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love Railings I used the exterior matte on my front door. I also plan on painting my shutters with this color. Railings is an awesome classic color that runs between navy blue and black. I did have to put on an extra coat in order to get a smooth finish on the door. I did the last coat with a roller which looked much better than when I used a brush all over (my bad). So I recommend a roller for all large flat surfaces particularly when using the matte finish.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A complex black ..black but not black Usually my go to colour is Off Black but I wanted dark but not quite as dark, and this was perfect. Even with the blue tone, it is warm and sumptuous . Modern emulsion was perfect for our kitchen

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Rich and modern We redid out bedroom and used Great White on the walls but put Railings on the accent wall, behind the bed. The trim is in Railings full gloss. It is stunning. The dark primer is a must to pull off the richness and density of this amazing color. Don't skimp on the prep. We have a south facing bedroom with sunshine all day. The Great White sometimes looks gray, off white with a hint of pink, and soft neutral white. It has so many personalities which is why this paint is worth every penny. It's as if it's a dynamic, living thing in your room. Always changing. It's stunning.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I really nice rich blue/black I've been decorating my living room recently and after get some inspiration from the farrow and ball videos on Instagram I decided to paint my wood work in railings. It was a little bit scary to begin with but definitely the right choice, its really pulled the room together. I also painted the radiator, the fireplace and did a boarder around the room on the floorboards in railings. I'm really pleased with how it's turned out.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful deep blue When it goes up it reads black but when done you’ll see the darkest blue. Used it for walls in living room and trim in entry. Used far less paint than other brands for same coverage.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Beautiful Color! Finish Marks Easily. We wanted to try out this brand to see if the reviews only met our expectations vs. a big box brand. Overall the finish is beautiful; there is a noticeable difference in our estate emulsion product vs. others we have used. I'm not sure if it will fade more overtime, but the it was easy to see the lapping effect after 3 coats even though it was rolled as quickly as we could. I definitely recommend spraying it if at all possible. The one note I'm dissappointed with is an area I brushed up against with my pants. That area had a noticeable darker effect from the contact, and then when I tried to remove it, it just made the entire area worse. I'm not sure how to correct it without repainting that section. All in all, I'd try another color again, but need to be careful that it isn't in a room the wall would be in contact with anything like pets or children, otherwise I'd be afraid it would look horrible over time.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Dead Flat is not a matte finish Love the colour, but the dead flat finish is definitely not a matte finish, it is closer to an eggshell. Probably about 10-15% sheen. I’m really disappointed. If I’d known I would have saved the money and gone with a cheaper Benjamin Moore paint.
