A quiet grey brown

This grey brown classic takes its characterful name from the fawny colour of the British field mouse. Much like its namesake, the green based Mouse’s Back is quiet in nature and feels soft in rooms both large and small. It will read greener when used on the walls of underlit rooms and is the perfect accent on furniture or floors when combined with more traditional shades such as Setting Plaster and Lime White.

Complementary white: Slipper Satin

The finest ingredients

The finest ingredients

We’re dedicated to perfecting the art of paint. At our home in Dorset, we combine the finest ingredients, 75 years of experience and technical precision to help you create beautiful spaces that stay beautiful. Even in our colour rich paints, less than 8% of the tin is the colour. The other 92% is what creates the quality, depth and extraordinary response to light that transforms your home.

Paint is like coffee. The colour is the froth on the top, but it’s the quality of the rest of the cup that makes it taste good.
– Richard Ball, Farrow & Ball Co-founder

We use twelve exclusive pigments, all specifically selected for their colour intensity. We take colour seriously, so naturally, we only accept the very best. By using these same pigments to make every colour in our palette, all our shades combine effortlessly, making it easy for you to put together a cohesive colour scheme.

Deeper, richer colours

Deeper, richer colours

Packed with pigment for an extraordinary response to every kind of light.

We add generous helpings of rich pigment to create our signature look – deep colours with complex undertones. The same space that feels bright and airy in morning sun, can feel cosy and intimate by evening. Our teams design each shade under every kind of light, so it will be perfectly balanced in every setting.

Extraordinary response to light

Extraordinary response to light

We spend months carefully crafting and testing each of our paint colours to make sure they share our signature extraordinary response to light. This beautiful reaction to changing light, like bringing out different undertones or shifting intensity, is what makes our paint so special.

Slipper Satin

Without cool blue undertones, Slipper Satin often reads as a pale grey chalk which makes for a perfect neutral on walls with darker Old White woodwork. Find out more about Slipper Satin

Every colour in the Farrow & Ball palette is paired with a specific shade of white, these are selected to celebrate a shared undertone and create harmonious spaces alongside your chosen colour.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The feeling we wanted to create We have an Austrian built Chalet (in California) and the previous owners painted the 1980's oak paneling a cheap off whit to "brighten" the room. We hoped to restore our home to a true Austrian Chalet. We stripped the paint to find 1980's oak that just wasn't right. Mouse's Back has turned the room into a beautiful space with warmth that matches the feeling of the home.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Painted church pew The perfect colour for my old church pew. Sits well with the shaded white kitchen cabinets and school house white walls - very pleased with this colour! A lovely warm darker neutral.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Unbelievable pigment Requires three coats but the colour is unmatched. I have tried colour matching in the past and it never works!!!/ you will always loose the depth of colour. So pleased with the results, a lot more green than advertised, beautiful moss colour.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Great colour, awful finish in Dead Flat I used Dead Flat on my wardrobe doors, the colour is perfect but the finish is poor. It marks so easily, the slightest knock when putting a garment in the wardrobe leaves a mark. I don’t think it’s as described, durable and able to be cleaned easily. It’s described as suitable for walls and woodwork, in this colour definitely not in my opinion. Different colours can be different in terms of cover, wear etc.. I’m very disappointed, an expensive mistake.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Dead Flat finish is awful - don’t buy! My husband and I decided to try the new Dead Flat finish as it’s been all over Farrow & Ball’s advertising lately, and we couldn’t regret it more. It looks absolutely horrible. We have used Modern Emulsion and Modern Eggshell many other times in our home with great results, but the Dead Flat is thin and streaky with very poor coverage. We used one coat of the recommended primer and two coats of paint and it just looks horrible. Customer service told my husband that two coats of primer work best with this new finish, you can’t have air conditioning on while painting, and it can’t be a humid day outside. Nowhere on the website says Dead Flat needs two coats of primer, which just adds more time and money to a project. If we had known it was so finicky we would absolutely not have purchased it and would have used a more reliable (and less expensive) paint option. We have to repaint the wall entirely so wasted a lot of money and time using this paint. We even bought Dead Flat paint for another room and my husband refuses to use it in that room because of how bad it looks in the painted room. Don’t make our mistake. (On a color note - Mouse’s Back is lovely. Beautiful olive brown)
