A pale and illuminating blue

Evoking the colour of summer skies, Borrowed Light is a wonderfully pale blue named after the delicate light that cascades through small windows and fanlights. It works as well in a room deprived of light as it does in an airy sunroom. This soft and classic tone is perfectly suited to children’s bedrooms, especially when contrasted with Stiffkey Blue on furniture or woodwork.

Key features

The finest ingredients

The finest ingredients

We’re dedicated to perfecting the art of paint. At our home in Dorset, we combine the finest ingredients, 75 years of experience and technical precision to help you create beautiful spaces that stay beautiful. Even in our colour rich paints, less than 8% of the tin is the colour. The other 92% is what creates the quality, depth and extraordinary response to light that transforms your home.

Paint is like coffee. The colour is the froth on the top, but it’s the quality of the rest of the cup that makes it taste good.
– Richard Ball, Farrow & Ball Co-founder

We use twelve exclusive pigments, all specifically selected for their colour intensity. We take colour seriously, so naturally, we only accept the very best. By using these same pigments to make every colour in our palette, all our shades combine effortlessly, making it easy for you to put together a cohesive colour scheme.

Deeper, richer colours

Deeper, richer colours

Packed with pigment for an extraordinary response to every kind of light.

We add generous helpings of rich pigment to create our signature look – deep colours with complex undertones. The same space that feels bright and airy in morning sun, can feel cosy and intimate by evening. Our teams design each shade under every kind of light, so it will be perfectly balanced in every setting.

Extraordinary response to light

Extraordinary response to light

We spend months carefully crafting and testing each of our paint colours to make sure they share our signature extraordinary response to light. This beautiful reaction to changing light, like bringing out different undertones or shifting intensity, is what makes our paint so special.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Contemplative painting High quality dense paint responding to light and time of day. Using a brush rather than a roller requires utmost concentration. Almost meditative.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Perfect Color! I saw this color for the first time in a better homes and Gardens magazine a few years ago. I tore out the page, and I have kept it ever cents. I finally ordered myself this color, and I could not be happier! It is true that the color does change with the light, it is exquisite. Lovely texture, and the color is simply perfect! My all-time favorite color!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect colour The perfect colour for my little ones bedroom, calming and light. Matched with Stoney Ground for the small shelves and shutters. More subtle and softer than white. Paint was easy to apply and a great finish.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Borrowed Light for a calming guest room Borrowed light brought a cool color to the room to ease into the new home on the water.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Superb finish. Followed the instructions, including undercoat, and the result was the usual F&B excellent gloss finish. Colour is always a matter of taste and I would have preferred a slightly stronger tint of colour as I suspect most would view my garage doors as white. Having said that I am still pleased , but it highlights the value of purchasing sample tins in advance if the correct colour is essential to your plans.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Creating a "stand out" floor in my home office The paint went on very well and dried quickly. As it was for a floor, I put a second coat on to get maximum coverage. I'm really pleased with the end result and it's very hard wearing.
