Limewash
Limewash is a traditional finish, originally developed to protect lime rendered buildings while allowing the surface to breathe. It bonds to the building itself to protect your home from the elements.

Walls: Skimming Stone painted in Limewash | Image: @shiftabrick
Limewash: Finished Look
Unlike our other finishes, Limewash bonds to become part of the lime surface it is applied to and so its final appearance is shaped by the character of the lime beneath. Porosity, texture and natural variations in lime render all influence the depth and tone of the colour. More porous areas absorb more paint – which can lighten or darken the colour chosen, and any uneven areas will create a mottled and gently textured effect. This also makes it unsuitable for wiping or cleaning.
A gradual build-up of coats can even out the final colour, however for some it is this unique and changeable appearance that gives Limewash its charm.
If you’re looking for a uniform, easy to apply finish that can stand up to regular cleaning, our Interior and Exterior Ranges are an excellent choice. For older properties with solid walls, our Specialist Finishes may be more suitable. If in doubt, contact our customer service team.
Choosing a Colour
Our colour references for Limewash should only be used as a guide, as the final result will be a unique combination of the colour and the natural properties of the surface beneath. Our Limewash can also appear a lot darker in the tin than when applied.
Applying Limewash
Whether it’s being used to protect a historic exterior, or to create a unique appearance on lime rendered surfaces, the high pH of Limewash means it’s vital to wear protective clothing and eyewear, and consider using a highly experienced professional decorator. More information is available in our product advice sheets. If you need any further assistance, our customer service team are always happy to help.

How Light Affects Colour
An extraordinary response to light is our paint’s most distinctive asset, but while we – and you – love the beautiful, unexpected results of different light sources meeting our colours, this can add an extra layer of complexity when choosing how to redecorate.
Whether you’re refreshing a room or updating the outside of your home, light plays an important role in how colour is perceived. Our brief guide will give you some options for making the most of different light, whether that means embracing it wholeheartedly, or offsetting it with a few clever tricks.
Natural Light
Natural Light
The quality of the light, the time of day, and even the time of year can change how we perceive colour under natural light. This means it can be difficult to pin down every element that might play tricks with your paint colour, but we do have a top tip for outwitting unfavourable light conditions. It all comes down to considering the aspect of the room you’re painting – whether it faces east, west, north, or south.

Outside spaces
Unlike interiors, exterior surfaces are seen in full daylight and often from a distance, so colours can appear lighter and brighter than you might expect. For this reason, it can be helpful to choose a shade slightly stronger than one you’d select indoors.
When planning an exterior scheme, try to think of the property as a whole. Masonry, window frames, doors, metalwork and garden structures should work together, just as architectural elements do within a room. The surrounding environment also plays a part, so it’s always worth looking at colours in situ and noticing how they change throughout the day as the natural light shifts around your home.

Scheme
South Facing Spaces
South Facing Spaces
In fine weather, south facing rooms can be filled with warm light from dawn until dusk, making them among the easiest rooms to choose a palette for.
Using soft, pale tones on the walls of a south facing room is a great way to maximise the feeling of light and space. Blues, such as Pavilion Blue and Borrowed Light, create a calming aquatic feel, while Warm Neutrals like Joa’s White will create a warmer feel. For a crisp, fresh look no matter your wall colour, try a bright white on woodwork.

North Facing Rooms
North Facing Rooms

Painted in Railings No.31 | Dead Flat
Northern light tends to bring out the cooler tones within a colour, so if you’re using a lighter tone, avoid anything with a blue or grey base. Yellow based colours like Yellow Ground, New White and White Tie will help to bounce as much light as possible around the room. If you have the space, hanging a mirror to reflect the light will do the trick, too.
Another approach is not to fight nature, but to embrace the cooler light that comes into your north facing room with darker wall colours such as Railings or Down Pipe, which create a cosy, cocooning feel.

West Facing Rooms
West Facing Rooms
When decorating a west facing room, it’s useful to consider when you’ll be using it most. Light in west facing spaces is cooler in the morning and brighter in the afternoon.
In west facing rooms, the warm tones of Middleton Pink or Setting Plaster are excellent options for making the most of golden, late afternoon light, while Slipper Satin or Shaded White will look cool in the morning but balance the warmer light later in the day. Alternatively, embrace the changing nature of these spaces with a chameleon shade like Light Blue, which subtly shifts between blue and silver depending on the light.

Decorating East Facing Rooms
Decorating East Facing Rooms
East facing rooms are the opposite of west facing rooms, enjoying the most sun in the morning and cooler, muted light in the evening. So, again, the key is thinking about when you’re going to use the space.
If you mainly use the space later in the day, embracing the cooler evening light with light blues and greens can have a beautifully soft and calming effect – try Blue Ground or Teresa’s Green. Or use a deep, dark shade like Inchyra Blue or Hopper Head to create a cocooning, protective feel. If you use the room during the day, make the most of the morning sun with bright, lively shades like Whirlybird or the aptly named Breakfast Room Green.

Artificial Light
Artificial Light
Just like natural light, artificial lighting can affect how colours appear. Halogen and incandescent bulbs emit yellow light, which makes wall colours appear warmer, while cool white bulbs tend to give off a bluer light, giving paint a cooler cast. For the truest representation of your chosen wall colour, you may want to try a neutral white bulb, which most accurately replicates daylight.

Ways of Decorating
Creating a beautifully considered scheme is easier than you may think, and to help you get started we’ve gathered some easy-to-follow tips and tricks. From woodwork and walls to ceilings and floors – and even the spaces just beyond your front door – we’ve got tried and tested ways of bringing colour into your home and garden.
Light on Dark
Light on Dark
A true classic, the most traditional style of decorating is to use colour on your walls and white on the woodwork, creating a crisp contrast and feeling of freshness. All our colours have a carefully chosen complementary white, making it easier than ever to complete your scheme.

Dark on Light
Dark on Light
For a sophisticated, slightly more unexpected twist, try painting a darker shade on your trim paired with paler walls. This simple trick makes a room seem bigger and airier by making the larger surface of the wall above seem lighter by comparison.

Painted in Skimming Stone No.241 , Jitney No.293 & Tanner's Brown No.255
Decorating outside
The same principles that guide your interior scheme can work beautifully outside too, helping your home feel thoughtfully connected from the street to the garden.
Your front door is often the first place to make an impression. Painting the door and its frame in the same colour creates a stronger feature and can make the entrance feel larger and more welcoming. If you have a porch or entranceway, carrying the same shade across the surrounding woodwork or walls will give the space a more unified look.
The finish you choose can also shape the character of your exterior details. Full Gloss brings a crisp, reflective finish that feels more formal and architectural, while Exterior Eggshell provides a softer, more relaxed look for woodwork, trims and garden joinery.
Finally, think about how colour can connect inside and out. Using the same shades on interior and exterior elements – like window frames, doors or even garden furniture – can create a seamless flow between house and garden, helping the two spaces feel naturally linked.

Painted in French Gray No.18 ; Light Blue No.22 ; Brassica No.271 ; Marmelo No.316 | Exterior Eggshell
Colour Drenching
Colour Drenching
Choose a single colour for your whole room to add a sense of calm and simplicity, making your space feel bigger as walls flow seamlessly across woodwork and onto the ceiling. You can also add extra depth through different finishes.

Neutral Groups
Neutral Groups
One of the easiest ways to create a cohesive, considered scheme is using one of our neutral groups: Traditional, Yellow Based, Red Based, Contemporary, Easy, Architectural. Each group contains shades designed to bring out the best in each other, so all you need to do is choose the group you’re most drawn to for your space.

For more detailed information, see our full returns policy here
Private United Kingdom customers have certain cancellation rights under the Consumer Protection (Distance Selling) Regulations 2000 (the Regulations). Farrow & Ball Ltd offers the following returns policy:
1) Returns of unopened items are accepted within 28 days from date of delivery with a valid proof of purchase.
2) Any customer wishing to exercise this right must notify the vendor at either of the following: in writing to Farrow & Ball Ltd. Uddens Estate, Wimborne, Dorset. BH21 7NL (addressed to The Sales Team), by telephone to +44 1202 876141 or by email to sales@farrow-ball.com.
3) As a further condition of the right to return, customers must also arrange (at their own expense) to return the goods in a saleable condition to the address referred to in (2) above as soon as possible. If the vendor pays the return cost then this will be deducted from any refund. The goods will be deemed returned when actually received by the vendor at the said address. Alternatively items can also be returned in person (at no cost) to any Farrow & Ball Showroom with a valid proof of purchase.
4) Pending the return of the goods they must be kept in good condition.
5) Customers shall be entitled to a full refund (less any charges referred to in (3) above) on full compliance with the foregoing 1. Any goods made to customers' specifications or clearly personalised are excluded from the right to cancel 2. The following are bespoke products, manufactured specifically to order and therefore non-returnable - archived or bespoke wallpaper, special colour matches and archived colours.
Where goods delivered by the vendor are received by the customer damaged, the vendor must be notified within 24 hours of delivery in order for replacement goods to be re-sent free of charge. No such claims will be accepted after the 24 hours has elapsed.
UK Stockists - Delivery Update
Following your feedback regarding delivery days and long lead times, we have now introduced set ordering day/s, based on your ordering patterns, which brings consistency to your delivery days. Please refer to the recent email sent advising of changes to order days, reiteration of our Minimum Order Quantities and improved delivery lead times.
Please contact your BDM or trade@farrow-ball.com should you need any further support or clarification.
