A strong dark brown
Our darkest drab is named after the craftsmen who tan the hides and skins used to create leather. Tanner's Brown will read as almost black in lower lighting and is extremely useful to create a slightly softer look when used on the interior of fireplaces. It does, however, become browner in colour within well lit homes and exteriors due to its warm red undertones.
We’re dedicated to perfecting the art of paint. At our home in Dorset, we combine the finest ingredients, 75 years of experience and technical precision to help you create beautiful spaces that stay beautiful. Even in our colour rich paints, less than 8% of the tin is the colour. The other 92% is what creates the quality, depth and extraordinary response to light that transforms your home.
Paint is like coffee. The colour is the froth on the top, but it’s the quality of the rest of the cup that makes it taste good. – Richard Ball, Farrow & Ball Co-founder
We use twelve exclusive pigments, all specifically selected for their colour intensity. We take colour seriously, so naturally, we only accept the very best. By using these same pigments to make every colour in our palette, all our shades combine effortlessly, making it easy for you to put together a cohesive colour scheme.
Deeper, richer colours
Deeper, richer colours
Packed with pigment for an extraordinary response to every kind of light.
We add generous helpings of rich pigment to create our signature look – deep colours with complex undertones. The same space that feels bright and airy in morning sun, can feel cosy and intimate by evening. Our teams design each shade under every kind of light, so it will be perfectly balanced in every setting.
Extraordinary response to light
Extraordinary response to light
We spend months carefully crafting and testing each of our paint colours to make sure they share our signature extraordinary response to light. This beautiful reaction to changing light, like bringing out different undertones or shifting intensity, is what makes our paint so special.

I love this colour in my entrance hall and stairsI used Tanners Brown on the bannisters, dado rail and door frames in my entrance hall and on landing. It's stunning. Everyone who comes into the house loves it but cannot put their finger on the fact that it's dark brown: people see aubergine, or dark grey. It's so smart and warm, I'm kind of in love with it. Also going to use the leftover low gloss from the woodwork to paint a strip around the kitchen units on the walls instead of tiling, and then do Setting Plaster above on the walls. I think it will look fab. Deep chocolate, makes you want to lick it!

Like coloured water! We bought this a while ago in the modern eggshell. We only just got around to painting a sample card, so we can see how it goes on. We did therefore not use the primer (although we bought some for the project).
The result is simply terrible. The paint is really thin, and it appears to have hardly any pigment. It is like a watercolour wash! You can see all the brushmarks as well.
I'm now not sure whether to go ahead with the project (stair railings). The colour is lovely and just what we wanted. It is very much like an extremely dark wood.
We had been storing it indoors over this hot summer, so the tin got hot, but I can't see why that should effect the pigment - ie make most of it disappear into something colourless!
