A soft black

This soft black is one of the original Farrow & Ball colours - an uncomplicated name for a well loved classic. Off-Black is much more flattering to adjacent colours than stronger blacks because it feels so much milder in tone and has less of the underlying cool blue of Railings or Black Blue.

Key features

The finest ingredients

The finest ingredients

We’re dedicated to perfecting the art of paint. At our home in Dorset, we combine the finest ingredients, 75 years of experience and technical precision to help you create beautiful spaces that stay beautiful. Even in our colour rich paints, less than 8% of the tin is the colour. The other 92% is what creates the quality, depth and extraordinary response to light that transforms your home.

Paint is like coffee. The colour is the froth on the top, but it’s the quality of the rest of the cup that makes it taste good.
– Richard Ball, Farrow & Ball Co-founder

We use twelve exclusive pigments, all specifically selected for their colour intensity. We take colour seriously, so naturally, we only accept the very best. By using these same pigments to make every colour in our palette, all our shades combine effortlessly, making it easy for you to put together a cohesive colour scheme.

Deeper, richer colours

Deeper, richer colours

Packed with pigment for an extraordinary response to every kind of light.

We add generous helpings of rich pigment to create our signature look – deep colours with complex undertones. The same space that feels bright and airy in morning sun, can feel cosy and intimate by evening. Our teams design each shade under every kind of light, so it will be perfectly balanced in every setting.

Extraordinary response to light

Extraordinary response to light

We spend months carefully crafting and testing each of our paint colours to make sure they share our signature extraordinary response to light. This beautiful reaction to changing light, like bringing out different undertones or shifting intensity, is what makes our paint so special.

Interior and exterior finishes

Interior and exterior finishes

From walls, floors and furniture to radiators, skirtings and sheds, our range of paint finishes can help you transform almost any surface in your home (and outside it, too).

We even have multi-surface finishes like Dead Flat and Full Gloss, so you can tackle walls, woodwork and metal at the same time.

Our comprehensive range is comprised of paint finishes that not only look beautiful, but offer different practical benefits. Designed for a variety of different surfaces, each finish is compatible with our high-performance Primers & Undercoats to ensure exceptional coverage, adhesion and depth of colour.

Dark Tones

When it comes to using dark colours, the deeper the better. So, for an irresistibly inviting finished look, pair darker shades with our Dark Tones Primer & Undercoat. Based on the colour of Down Pipe, combining this primer with your topcoat creates an unrivalled richness and makes quite the statement.

Made with the same natural ingredients and pigments as our topcoats, our Primer & Undercoat is the crucial foundation for creating a rich, even and longer lasting finish.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Off black - the perfect dramatic finish for stairs I recently chose a new stair runner to replace the previous one which had been damaged. I wanted to paint the stairs to a colour that would complement the stair runner and a friend suggested Off-black. I am delighted with the finished look. It’s the perfect dramatic colour but still has a soft and not too harsh feel to it. Just love it - so much so we decided to paint a piece of furniture in the hallway to match.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Used to paint cupboards Used this on some built-in cupboards. Beautiful colour and had a good level of sheen. One coat of primer and two of the modern egg-shell and the cupboards look like they were professionally wrapped.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from To my surprise I purchased a sample of this Off Black, never look at a color with a little swatch, I had decided not to use this color. When my husband painted the feature wall in our dining living space he picked up this color. It was finished when I returned home. The outcome is Gorgeous!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The perfect dark - not too harsh Dark with warmth. After a colour consultancy with Ross in Edinburgh, we’ve used off-black modern eggshell with school house white, mouses back and shaded white for our accents without the hallway/open plan kitchen living areas and really pleased with the colour and depth it provides without being overpowering

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The best I bought this few months ago and I am so glad of the results. I used it like accent wall and on the ceiling, the result is just incredible!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good but... I bought a sample in estate emulsion and tried it on a radiator and it turned into a dark flat grey which I loved. So I bought the correct finish for wood and iran -estate eggshell- to paint all radiators but the colour is different from the sample. It is a shiny deep black. The colour seems to change depending on the finish and surfaces so it is a risk to buy a big can if you dont try it first. Deludente as I bought 2.5 lt and paid a fortune.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Off black exterior paint We used Off black for our interior woodwork which was between black and charcoal. This which we painted our outbuilding bricks with looks like anthracite - maybe slightly lighter. It’s a grey basically

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Shiny peeks GHOSTED BY CUSTOMER SERVICE!! Colour is nice so I painted my whole bathroom this colour. After about 2 week the peeks of the wall started going shiny. When I reached out to the company they wouldn’t give me an answer why it was happening and eventually just ghosted me when I said I didn’t have the empty paint can anymore to send then the purchase code even though I didn’t want a replacement. WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE! I’ve reached out multiple times with zero response.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Modern Eggshell, very disappointing Used off black modern eggshell to paint new staircase handrails and spindles over a dark grey undercoat. The paint is too thick to get a nice flat finish without showing brush strokes but yet has really poor coverage resulting in needing 3 coats which look like it has been applied too thickly. Not impressed at all, wish I’d used a different paint.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not worth the price The paint is super watery and takes a lot of coats to cover.
Date published: 2023-09-16
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Amazingly Poor Product This is not a professional product. Weeks after applying the paint it still sticks to any object that is placed on it. This paint was spec'd by an interior designer with no sense of the real world. If you want to get a finish that is reminiscent of early generation latex paint, that never really seems to dry, and really just is tedious and poorly designed... this is the paint for you.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not black So off black that it’s dark blue, why would you like even advertise it with the word black in the name.
