An inky navy

This inky blue is named after the Norfolk beach where the mud, along with the cockles, share a particular deep navy hue. Although traditional in feel, Stiffkey Blue is often used as an alternative to Down Pipe to create a richly dramatic space with a more contemporary finish. When used in well lit areas of the home it will appear much bluer, working wonderfully when contrasted with Ammonite.

Key features

The finest ingredients

The finest ingredients

We’re dedicated to perfecting the art of paint. At our home in Dorset, we combine the finest ingredients, 75 years of experience and technical precision to help you create beautiful spaces that stay beautiful. Even in our colour rich paints, less than 8% of the tin is the colour. The other 92% is what creates the quality, depth and extraordinary response to light that transforms your home.

Paint is like coffee. The colour is the froth on the top, but it’s the quality of the rest of the cup that makes it taste good.
– Richard Ball, Farrow & Ball Co-founder

We use twelve exclusive pigments, all specifically selected for their colour intensity. We take colour seriously, so naturally, we only accept the very best. By using these same pigments to make every colour in our palette, all our shades combine effortlessly, making it easy for you to put together a cohesive colour scheme.

Deeper, richer colours

Deeper, richer colours

Packed with pigment for an extraordinary response to every kind of light.

We add generous helpings of rich pigment to create our signature look – deep colours with complex undertones. The same space that feels bright and airy in morning sun, can feel cosy and intimate by evening. Our teams design each shade under every kind of light, so it will be perfectly balanced in every setting.

Extraordinary response to light

Extraordinary response to light

We spend months carefully crafting and testing each of our paint colours to make sure they share our signature extraordinary response to light. This beautiful reaction to changing light, like bringing out different undertones or shifting intensity, is what makes our paint so special.

Interior and exterior finishes

Interior and exterior finishes

From walls, floors and furniture to radiators, skirtings and sheds, our range of paint finishes can help you transform almost any surface in your home (and outside it, too).

We even have multi-surface finishes like Dead Flat and Full Gloss, so you can tackle walls, woodwork and metal at the same time.

Our comprehensive range is comprised of paint finishes that not only look beautiful, but offer different practical benefits. Designed for a variety of different surfaces, each finish is compatible with our high-performance Primers & Undercoats to ensure exceptional coverage, adhesion and depth of colour.

Dark Tones

When it comes to using dark colours, the deeper the better. So, for an irresistibly inviting finished look, pair darker shades with our Dark Tones Primer & Undercoat. Based on the colour of Down Pipe, combining this primer with your topcoat creates an unrivalled richness and makes quite the statement.

Made with the same natural ingredients and pigments as our topcoats, our Primer & Undercoat is the crucial foundation for creating a rich, even and longer lasting finish.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful color, beautiful paint! Beautiful color - sophisticated and the dead flat finish is so pigment rich. Just stunning in our living room. Highly recommend the color and the finish. Took 2 coats of paint, but was wonderful to work with. Not drippy and no real odor when working with the paint.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Brilliant Shade Of Blue Really pleased with the colour , it’s a nice deep and rich blue. We was going to have wallpaper where we painted with Stiffkey Blue but glad we went with the paint option to compliment the Ammonite and Manor House Gray. We wouldn’t use any other paint but Farrow And Ball now , we’re converted.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from In a low light room, very navy! We bought samples of De Nimes and Stiffkey blue for our nursery. In our room, which is low on natural night, Stiffkey reads as a true navy with hints of matte grey/black. It’s very beautiful and classic looking. (For more details, De Nimes in that room was quite grey with a blue/green hint).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Hallway I’ve turned our hallway from bright red throughout to Dimpse downstairs and used Stiffkey Blue for the feature wall. Decided to paint the cloakroom in the same colour. Very happy with the result, used modern emulsion as a high traffic area.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Thought it may be too dark but couldn't be happier Love F and B paint and have a house full of different colours. This was a new addition to the front room which is a light south facing room but it makes it so cosy, ceiling in purbeck stone and paintwork white

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Unparalleled colour I'm so pleased I bought a tester of this colour to compare to other paint, the quality of colour in Farrow and Ball paint is just so much better. Easy to paint, slightly drippy if not careful, 2 coats sufficient, doesn't bleed under delicate frog tape (thank goodness!).

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Beautiful color but marks easily We used this in our hall and then again in our master bedroom. It’s beautiful and not too dark. It goes one well although both rooms did need three coats. The paint marks easily so be prepared to do the odd touch up over time.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Lovely finish but prefer modern emulsion I was excited to try this new paint but unfortunately I was disappointed. It may have been the extreme summer heat but the paint was drying out so fast I could barely spread it. I needed a second tin to finish my one wall, it needed 3 coats. The finish is lovely though as always with F&B. It really is very Matt.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not recommended Color and finish are gorgeous. But the paint did not apply well. It just slipped around and left behind streaks and spots. Also the pail started leaking out of the bottom. Very disappointed. I ended up getting a color match at a local paint store and did the second coat with a different brand.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Extremely disappointed I tried to order some more samples, of some new colors because I'm not getting the color just right that I wanted. They will not send me samples of the new colors except on paper. Which does not make sense to me. If I'm going to pay almost $150 for a can of paint they should at least be able to supply me sample paint for it. I was going to order three gallons of paint but now I'm not. Unless I can get the samples. I'm not paying $8 for paper samples.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Can't comment I can't really comment on the paint as when it was delivered it had leaked everywhere and the tin was dented so I can't get the lid back on. F&B have offers to replace it.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not Welcome in My Shop. If you like a paint that clogs up your shop for 2 weeks, you will love Farrow and Ball. It literally took two weeks to dry in my shop. If it was handled at all there would be fingerprints and rub marks on the paint. It's also picky to apply although I can handle that at my level of coatings experience.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Nice colour but not for for purpose Applied the paint 5 days ago. It’s been 20+ degrees all week and the first coat still hasn’t dried. Saw some other reviews had this issue but foolishly I decided to give it a try. Ah well, luckily it’s only £120 a tin!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Marks easily Love the color, but marks easily and paint comes off the wall when you try to clean it.
