A warm light grey

This stony off white takes its name from a 19th century skim, or plaster colour, but often reminds us of childhood afternoons skimming stones. With its warm light grey undertones, Skimming Stone is extremely versatile and particularly suited to soothing bedroom schemes. One of our Contemporary Neutrals, it sits with the lighter Strong White and darker Elephant's Breath for a clean and contemporary look, but can also be used in a darker statement scheme alongside Pelt or London Clay.

Complementary white: Strong White

The finest ingredients

The finest ingredients

We’re dedicated to perfecting the art of paint. At our home in Dorset, we combine the finest ingredients, 75 years of experience and technical precision to help you create beautiful spaces that stay beautiful. Even in our colour rich paints, less than 8% of the tin is the colour. The other 92% is what creates the quality, depth and extraordinary response to light that transforms your home.

Paint is like coffee. The colour is the froth on the top, but it’s the quality of the rest of the cup that makes it taste good.
– Richard Ball, Farrow & Ball Co-founder

We use twelve exclusive pigments, all specifically selected for their colour intensity. We take colour seriously, so naturally, we only accept the very best. By using these same pigments to make every colour in our palette, all our shades combine effortlessly, making it easy for you to put together a cohesive colour scheme.

Deeper, richer colours

Deeper, richer colours

Packed with pigment for an extraordinary response to every kind of light.

We add generous helpings of rich pigment to create our signature look – deep colours with complex undertones. The same space that feels bright and airy in morning sun, can feel cosy and intimate by evening. Our teams design each shade under every kind of light, so it will be perfectly balanced in every setting.

Extraordinary response to light

Extraordinary response to light

We spend months carefully crafting and testing each of our paint colours to make sure they share our signature extraordinary response to light. This beautiful reaction to changing light, like bringing out different undertones or shifting intensity, is what makes our paint so special.

Interior and exterior finishes

Interior and exterior finishes

From walls, floors and furniture to radiators, skirtings and sheds, our range of paint finishes can help you transform almost any surface in your home (and outside it, too).

We even have multi-surface finishes like Dead Flat and Full Gloss, so you can tackle walls, woodwork and metal at the same time.

Our comprehensive range is comprised of paint finishes that not only look beautiful, but offer different practical benefits. Designed for a variety of different surfaces, each finish is compatible with our high-performance Primers & Undercoats to ensure exceptional coverage, adhesion and depth of colour.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Colour of Skimming Stone A beautiful clean and fresh stony colour, but be aware that it can appear to be either a soft beige or a soft grey depending on how the light strikes it in a room.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A great colour for a warm and inviting living room Skimming Stone is one of the most beautiful neutrals I have ever used. It is perfect for my east-facing living room. I was looking for something elegant and understated to pair with my piano. Skimming Stone varies throughout the day. It sometimes reads as a warm gray. Later in the day subtle lilac undertones appear, and in incandescent light is glows with warmth. It makes one feel at home. I bought the new Dead Flat finish and it goes on like butter. It was great to work with, and was very forgiving.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The perfect greige Perfect colour for our spare room. We’ve paired with a beige headboard and cushions, depending on the lighting it all looks either grey or beige. We’ve paired with All White on the ceiling and windows.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from In love with this colour - but it’s not grey I’ve used this in my downstairs loo after looking for a warm toned beige kind of colour. It is absolutely gorgeous and I recommend it to everyone and their dog. I wouldn’t describe this paint as grey at all (used in small north facing WC with a tiny window). It’s a warm beige, a few shades up from off white. But it’s stunning and I’m so happy with it

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Gorgeous Warm Off-White If you're looking for a warm off white colour which works well with both light and dark wood look no further. We used this colour throughout the whole of our ground floor at our Victorian home and it works perfectly in both natural light and darker areas. In the darker areas it still looks like a nice uplifting white. If you're looking for a cooler more grey tone look for something else. This worked perfectly for us and was just what we were looking for.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Colors? Great. Service? Non-existent Paint and paint color quality are exceptional. However, 40 percent of this expensive shipment came in compromised -- contractor sent me photos of the leaked paint. F & B's return window is 24 hours. The cans weren't inspected by contractor until that window has closed. We had no recourse. There are paint companies based in U.S. that provide exceptional quality paint and these colors can be copied. I'm done with Farrow and Ball despite my hefty investment in their cute little paint sample cans (over 20) due to our new construction plans.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Beige It really didn't come out as I expected. Farrow and Ball describe Skimming Stone as a warm light grey but I'd say this is completely beige. Perhaps it's due to my lounge having north and west windows. When the sun shines through the west window, the brown tones really show.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from A no no for north-facing The quality of the paint, as always is great. Unfortunately, I cannot say the same about the colour in my north-facing hallway. I pondered over this a long time and got in store recommendations from very helpful F&B staff. I wanted a warm and welcoming entrance way. What I have got is a cold, lilac-tinged grey. I rather wish the charming staff had asked whether the lilac tones in a north facing hallway would appeal. I have since spent a small fortune, having the trim re-painted from the Wimborne White I'd purchased to another colour in an attempt to mute the lilac. On this same job, I had a north-facing bedroom painted in Dimity with Pointing trim -- and it is absolutely perfect. I so wish I'd kept with this for my hallway!
