A strong and moody yellow

This deep mustard yellow is famously named after the pigment collected from the urine of cows fed on a special diet of mango leaves! It creates a really cosy and surprisingly un-yellow space when contrasted with a dark tone like Tanner's Brown. It should, however, be used in moderation in small rooms where its moody intensity may be a little overwhelming.

The finest ingredients

The finest ingredients

We’re dedicated to perfecting the art of paint. At our home in Dorset, we combine the finest ingredients, 75 years of experience and technical precision to help you create beautiful spaces that stay beautiful. Even in our colour rich paints, less than 8% of the tin is the colour. The other 92% is what creates the quality, depth and extraordinary response to light that transforms your home.

Paint is like coffee. The colour is the froth on the top, but it’s the quality of the rest of the cup that makes it taste good.
– Richard Ball, Farrow & Ball Co-founder

We use twelve exclusive pigments, all specifically selected for their colour intensity. We take colour seriously, so naturally, we only accept the very best. By using these same pigments to make every colour in our palette, all our shades combine effortlessly, making it easy for you to put together a cohesive colour scheme.

Deeper, richer colours

Deeper, richer colours

Packed with pigment for an extraordinary response to every kind of light.

We add generous helpings of rich pigment to create our signature look – deep colours with complex undertones. The same space that feels bright and airy in morning sun, can feel cosy and intimate by evening. Our teams design each shade under every kind of light, so it will be perfectly balanced in every setting.

Extraordinary response to light

Extraordinary response to light

We spend months carefully crafting and testing each of our paint colours to make sure they share our signature extraordinary response to light. This beautiful reaction to changing light, like bringing out different undertones or shifting intensity, is what makes our paint so special.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The happiest room in the house. I’ve not used too much yellow in the past but this house just screamed for happy, bright colours. So when we repainted our kitchen this stunning yellow was on the top of my list. Potentially unusual I paired it with my favourite F&B neutral, skimming stone and it came out a treat! As always the paint goes on smoothly and has non of those offensive odours. The finish is amazing and still looks as great today as when we first painted it! Love it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Kitchen cabinet reinvention Beautiful colour which we used to make the light bounce off our kitchen cabinets. It’s a flat yellow shade bordering on mustard yellow. The flat finish is now our favourite finish too. Goes on as well as estate emulsion. High quality all round

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Colour does not work with artificial light I painted my hallway doors in India Yellow and the hallway walls in Schoolhouse white. The hallway does not have windows and only gets natural light when I leave the bedroom doors open. There is no doubt that India Yellow is an absolutely gorgeous colour in daylight HOWEVER it does not work once I turn the lights on at night. It becomes a very unsightly pus-like colour, really ugly and disgusting actually. I tried different lightbulbs from warm 1700 kelvin to daylight 6000 kelvin as well as different lumen strengths. Nothing looks right. Today’s energy saving lightbulbs have a CRI (colour rendering index) of about 80 with 100 being a true representation of a colour. It seems that this colour has not been developed with energy saving lightbulbs in mind as I can not imagine that India Yellow could have passed any aesthetic quality controls. Perhaps Farrow and Ball could write a guide on which colours work well with artificial lights - perhaps even giving an indication what lightbulbs to use - and which ones are better suited for a daytime room. I wasted an hour researching kelvins, lumens and CRI on the internet and then went out to buy a variety of lightbulbs that did not change the pus-look. As other reviewers have mentioned, India Yellow needs more than just two coats. I have been painting four bedroom doors for the last three days giving them up to five coats of paint. A big fan of Farrow and Ball paints, I did not want to stop believing that the colour eventually will look beautiful. It still looks like pus and the colour will need to be changed. Very disappointing.
