A soothing green grey

French Gray is really much more green than grey, but characterfully flits between the two depending on the light and time of day. Taking inspiration from French decoration and wallpapers used in the 19th century, it creates the most relaxed of rooms. This soothing hue is perfect for exterior woodwork and a particular favourite for front doors in our matt Exterior Eggshell, or garden furniture where it sits seamlessly amongst the greenery.

Complementary white: Slipper Satin

The finest ingredients

The finest ingredients

We’re dedicated to perfecting the art of paint. At our home in Dorset, we combine the finest ingredients, 75 years of experience and technical precision to help you create beautiful spaces that stay beautiful. Even in our colour rich paints, less than 8% of the tin is the colour. The other 92% is what creates the quality, depth and extraordinary response to light that transforms your home.

Paint is like coffee. The colour is the froth on the top, but it’s the quality of the rest of the cup that makes it taste good.
– Richard Ball, Farrow & Ball Co-founder

We use twelve exclusive pigments, all specifically selected for their colour intensity. We take colour seriously, so naturally, we only accept the very best. By using these same pigments to make every colour in our palette, all our shades combine effortlessly, making it easy for you to put together a cohesive colour scheme.

Deeper, richer colours

Deeper, richer colours

Packed with pigment for an extraordinary response to every kind of light.

We add generous helpings of rich pigment to create our signature look – deep colours with complex undertones. The same space that feels bright and airy in morning sun, can feel cosy and intimate by evening. Our teams design each shade under every kind of light, so it will be perfectly balanced in every setting.

Extraordinary response to light

Extraordinary response to light

We spend months carefully crafting and testing each of our paint colours to make sure they share our signature extraordinary response to light. This beautiful reaction to changing light, like bringing out different undertones or shifting intensity, is what makes our paint so special.

Interior and exterior finishes

Interior and exterior finishes

From walls, floors and furniture to radiators, skirtings and sheds, our range of paint finishes can help you transform almost any surface in your home (and outside it, too).

We even have multi-surface finishes like Dead Flat® and Full Gloss, so you can tackle walls, woodwork and metal at the same time.

Our comprehensive range is comprised of paint finishes that not only look beautiful, but offer different practical benefits. Designed for a variety of different surfaces, each finish is compatible with our high-performance Primers & Undercoats to ensure exceptional coverage, adhesion and depth of colour.

Slipper Satin

Without cool blue undertones, Slipper Satin often reads as a pale grey chalk which makes for a perfect neutral on walls with darker Old White woodwork. Find out more about Slipper Satin

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Delicious and delightful This paint is my go-to for quality coverage and enjoyable, healthy painting. The colors are rich and subtle. My two favorites thus far are French Gray and Wimborne White. Delicious and delightful.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful color! You know a brand is good when people are trying to find dupes. Just spend the extra money because the quality is worth it! Our contractor who has done many different paint colors and brands said Farrow and Ball was one of his top favorites.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect for our dining room We tried several different colours - some that seemed like they would be very similar to French Gray but in reality they did not look anywhere near as nice when we tested them. We are delighted with the result - it has completely transformed the dated dining room in our new house.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Happy Customer Love the beautiful color and quality of the paint. I stirred the paint but there was no separation. Very pleased.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great paint to apply. I’ve used F&B French grey before and it’s a great paint when applied just don’t cut corners and stick to F&B advice on how to apply. Give all prep work ie fillers, plasters & calking to fully dry before you apply your expensive paint and you won’t have to touch it again for several years to come.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Always fresh Such a wonderful colour. We have used it on the outside woodwork on our stone farmhouse. I never tire of looking at it. We are always asked which colour it is!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Thankful! It took me an eon to choose a color my family would agree upon. This color works nicely in our country cottage, and has subtle changes throughout the day moving from light green to blue green— kind of has a grey tone—But, in the lower light in our SW facing family room, it always stays green. We used Dead Flat— this is an old house, and the paint did an excellent job muting the imperfections. We used Blackened on the ceiling— as I had seen done in an English flat shown in the inspiration pictures. The Blackened, hits blue at times, but otherwise reads whitish. It was a good call. In the inspiration photo they use mahogany on door frames which will eventually become the color of the built in cabinet in the room. I’m thankful it worked out. Painter said it was extremely high quality paint.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Calming colour I’d describe it as pale Khaki. Definitely more green than grey. Nice, easy paint to work with. I did 2 coats of a Johnstone’s primer and 3 coats of French Gray.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A green kitchen Our kitchen renovation involves 3 (and possibly 4) F&B colors, and I could not be happier with my choices. The palette is warm, harmonious, and easy to live with. So glad that Stirabout arrived just in time! Rated 5 out of 5 by from French Grey for bedroom I have just had my master bedroom painted in French Grey. We wanted it to blend with the view of the trees outside the window. I love it. Such a calming sophisticated colour. Great for a bedroom.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful French gray I have a gray living room and I wanted a pop of colour that didn't clash and would bring a cosy, modern feeling to the room. I definitely found this with the French gray. I have yound children so I bought the modern emulsion version.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Gorgeous but 3 coats needed Colours is beautiful but coverage isn’t great. It’ll take 3 coats.
Date published: 2024-03-17
Rated 4 out of 5 by from French Grey We've used French grey in both our dining room and kitchen. The colour is beautiful and calming. We've used it on the walls with lime white on the cabinetry in the kitchen and it has a beautiful country feel. We have also used it with a feature wall of de nimes and it looks contemporary and so cosy. The modern eggshell is great but the estate emulsion I must admit does scratch off rather easily so I would use modern emulsion if like us have a busy household. Hope that helps.
