When Tan France settled in Salt Lake City with his husband and young children, it had been a fair few years since his own childhood in Yorkshire. But touches of England have found their way into the design expert’s home, from the red-brick, Tudor-style exterior to the décor inside. Sitting alongside these English accents are nods to his family’s wider story, including South Asian influences that speak to his Pakistani heritage and American elements for his husband’s upbringing and the place his family call home. Today, we’re taking a look at this delightful melting pot of design.
Wallpaper plays a starring role in this home, which was always going to be the case. Tan explains:
‘I’ve always thought that an interesting paper can bring a space to life. So many of the spaces in my home would have been nice without paper, but with paper, these spaces are truly special.’

It also provides a very fun way to incorporate something of meaning or symbolic significance, creating an opportunity for storytelling. Plus, the quality of Farrow & Ball paper is lovely! The colours are rich and vibrant and our installers love working with it.’

paper in a bespoke colourway. The green hues were specifically chosen to reflect the colour of the trees surrounding the home, while Tan was drawn to the design because it ‘perfectly fit the traditional aesthetic we were going for.’Walls:

Bathrooms are often overlooked when it comes to decorating, but these are no ordinary bathrooms — they include nods to all of the places that have inspired this home, becoming perfect examples of the story being told.
In the children’s bathroom, our metallic
wallpaper is a nod to the ‘Beehive State’ (or Utah) where the home is found. It also happens to be one of Tan’s favourite additions:
‘I’m crazy about the gold bee print that we used in our children’s bathroom. I think it’s so impactful, and offers a level of playful sophistication to the space.’
At the same time, Farrow & Ball classic
brings elements of both the UK and South East Asia to the powder room, as The Fox Group explains: ‘The lotus flower is native to South East Asia and is prevalent in its culture and symbolism. The design also speaks to the Art Nouveau style that originated in Great Britain. As both of these places have great meaning to Tan, this paper is all the more special.’Walls:
