It’s not always easy to strike a balance between a historically sympathetic renovation and a bold, directional look, but that’s exactly what architect Valerie Schweitzer from Valerie Schweitzer Architects has achieved in this Massachusetts carriage house.

In a neighborhood like this one, the pressure to get that balance right is particularly tangible. The house is situated in the famed historic district of Fisher Hill, whose grounds and roads were planned by Frederick Law Olmstead – father of Central Park, the Capitol Building, and the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair.

The house’s former hayloft is undoubtedly the star of the show, receiving a bold and bright Farrow & Ball makeover that’s a far cry from its agricultural days. “We began by expanding the narrow hayloft to let in more light and creating a new kitchen,” says Valerie.

To that was added touches of Oval Room Blue and Sap Green, creating an unexpected combination that nonetheless fits effortlessly with the room’s original features, proportions, and touches like the salvaged pine mantel.

Finally, for the ultimate personal touch, Valerie also created the custom artwork over the fireplace, its colours specifically chosen to complement the Farrow & Ball palette.
