Designer Spotlight: Telling a Story with Studio November

Designer Spotlight: Telling a Story with Studio November

24. Oktober 2024

Your home tells your story. And the Studio November team have made it their mission to help homeowners shape their storytelling. With a playful yet considered style, they create vibrant — often unexpected — spaces with something to say. We sat down with the team to hear about their approach, a few of their favourite spaces and their top tips for you.

Why are you drawn to Farrow & Ball for your projects?

We strive to create spaces with a natural connection to their surroundings, whether through a seamless flow between indoor and outdoor spaces or a harmonious transition between rooms. The Farrow & Ball colour palette is stunning, and the finishes are exceptional. Additionally, their approach to sustainability is significant to us in a world where supporting the planet is a collective responsibility.

Can you share a few of your favourite Farrow & Ball transformations?

Entrance Hall: Babouche & Studio Green

This design began with our client’s cherished memory of their son’s early years, specifically his favourite book, which featured paintings by Vincent Van Gogh. He was particularly captivated by The Starry Night. So, we based our colour palette on the colours in the painting: Babouche, Studio Green and Pitch Blue. We used Studio Green on the stairs, skirtings and architraves throughout the house to create a cohesive look. The natural brightness of Babouche complements the south-facing space and pairs beautifully with the Studio Green stairs. Choosing Babouche was also a bit of fun because it refers to slippers, aligning with the client’s “shoes off by the door!” policy.

Open Plan Living and Dining Room: Cromarty, Studio Green & Pelt

The light in this north facing space enhances the beautiful, subtle green hue of Cromarty, making it the perfect neutral for these spaces. It complements Studio Green on the skirting and views of the cottage garden outside. We painted the bookcase in Pelt — using durable Dead Flat® — for a touch of playful contrast.

Downstairs Toilet: Bancha

Our client adored Bancha and was eager to incorporate it into their home. The downstairs toilet, a small yet super bright room with a generous window overlooking the front garden, proved the perfect fit.

Child’s Bedroom: Pitch Blue

The occupant of this bedroom has a deep love for purple, and as Pitch Blue carries a hint of purple, it perfectly suits his preference. Given the room’s small size and his young age, we only applied Pitch Blue to two walls and used Strong White on the rest to keep the room bright and welcoming.

What is your advice for introducing a range of colours in the home, without compromising on versatility or functionality?

Introducing a range of colours is simple if it’s done thoughtfully. We always start with a base inspired by one particular element, such as a painting, a rug or a favourite piece of furniture. We then build on this foundation, adding contrasting and cohesive colours to reflect the desired atmosphere. We also repeat one or two of the colours in different rooms, which maintains consistency and helps create a sense of flow. We also recognise the impact of lighting, both artificial and natural, on colour. Therefore, we never commit to a paint colour until we’ve tested it in the space and can observe its interaction with its surroundings.

What are your three top tips for creating meaningful, timeless interiors?

Each interior we create is unique, telling the client’s life story, but three main principles consistently guide our designs:

  1. Let the colour guide you through the process: Colour is a foundational element that shapes the entire design journey.
  2. Be the storyteller of your life: Reflect your memories, likes, and dislikes in your space to create a truly personal environment.
  3. Invest in art and lighting: Spend time finding unique and eye-catching pieces. These elements are game changers that can transform any space.

What can we expect to see from Studio November next?

The unexpected!
