Hempel Foundation

There are four regions of the world that contain exceptional biodiversity and are highly threatened. The forests of these four regions only cover about 0.3% of the planet but hold nearly 1/3rd of all species on Earth. So, in order to prevent massive biodiversity loss, these are key regions of the world to focus strategic investments. The Hempel Foundation is committed to working in accordance with United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 15 focusing on some of the planet’s most valuable natural habitats. 

Farrow & Ball colleagues can apply to support The Hempel Foundation’s projects up close. Abi Constantine, one of our team, visited one of the biodiversity projects in Rwanda: 

“Seeing first-hand how the Hempel Foundation helps look after our planet was incredible. We visited the Nyungwe National Park and learnt about the initiatives in place to protect the many endemic species living there. From funding school visits that inspire the next generation of conservationists to employing local people as Eco Rangers so they no longer need to rely on poaching to support their families, the projects focus on empowering the community to create long-term solutions. It’s clear the Hempel Foundation is making a real difference and I’m so proud to play my small part in the picture.”

Education for the world's most vulnerable children is a focal point for the Hempel Foundation, focusing particularly on children in need in rural poverty without access to quality education - especially girls and primary school-aged children. Even before the COVID-19 pandemic, 90% of children in the world's poorest countries couldn’t read and understand simple text by the age of 10. This is defined as ‘learning poverty’. In the coming years, efforts will be intensified with a revised education strategy to increase the contribution to reaching the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4: Quality Education. 

While on her trip to Rwanda, our staff member Abi also visited the education projects being supported there: 

“During our trip, we had the privilege of visiting schools to see the work the Hempel Foundation is supporting for ourselves and hear directly from the children, teachers and parents involved in the projects. I’ll never forget the overwhelming sense of optimism that came from every conversation, with such a clear, collective drive to give each generation more opportunities than the one before. As well as working directly in schools with children who need extra support, the projects also work in the wider community with initiatives like saving collectives. I feel so grateful to have had the experience, it was truly once in a lifetime!”

Coatings play a key role in prolonging the life span of man-made structures. The Hempel Foundation Coatings Science and Technology Centre at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) is a world-class research environment to help make coatings more efficient and more sustainable. As well as the DTU, The Hempel Foundation has supported scientific research at The University of Manchester and École Nationale Supérieure de Chimie de Lille (ENSCL).
