Preparation & Application - Interior

Interior Floors

All our paints are water based, eco friendly and comply with the latest EU environmental legislation regarding the VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) content of paints. Our finishes are all low in odour and classified as either low or minimal VOC. These water based paints can be applied to surfaces previously painted in an oil based finish. However, surfaces painted in oil based paint require a minimum of two weeks drying time before water based paint is applied on top. Farrow & Ball oil based paint finishes are no longer available.

The following guidelines apply to the Floor Paint finish, suitable for interior wood or concrete floors.

Surface Preparation

Ensure the floor surface is sound, clean, dry and free from dirt, grease and any other contamination. For wood floors sand back sharp edges and any raised grain.

For bare wood floors:

  • Fill any open joins and cracks with a dedicated non flexible wood filler.
  • Sand to a smooth finish, vacuum and wipe down with a damp cloth.
  • Allow the wood to dry, patch prime any resinous knots with Farrow & Ball Knot & Resin Blocking Primer followed by one full coat of Farrow & Ball Wood Floor Primer & Undercoat to seal.


For painted wood floors:

  • Areas of old paint that have peeled or blistered need to be removed as per the instructions for bare wood floors.
  • As much of the previous paint as possible should be removed.
  • Apply one full coat of Farrow & Ball Wood Floor Primer & Undercoat to seal.


For varnished floors:

  • Ensure that all varnish is removed and follow the instructions for bare wood.


For waxed or polished floors:

  • May not accept Floor Paint, contact Farrow & Ball Customer Services for more guidance.


For new concrete floors:

  • Should be left for at least three months before painting.


For painted concrete floors:

  • Remove any surface debris and clean.
  • Rub down any areas that have peeled or blistered to achieve a good ‘key’.
  • Apply Farrow & Ball Masonry & Plaster Stabilising Primer to areas of exposed concrete.

Paint Application

  • When using more than one tin of the same colour, check that the batch numbers are the same (see the base of the tin). If not then mix the tins together before use.
  • Stir paint thoroughly before use
  • Apply two costs by brush or roller. A third coat may be necessary depending on the colour of the top coat and the original surface colour. Floor Paint is touch dry in one hour and can be recoated in four hours
  • Clean brushes and rollers with warm soapy water.

It provides a tough, washable and easily maintained surface and is an excellent complement to our Estate Emulsion and Modern Emulsion. This is a water based finish. This hard-wearing paint has a classic eggshell finish and is an ideal way of treating timber or concrete floors. Suitable for use in virtually every area of the house, from hallways to kitchens, bathrooms, utility rooms, playrooms and offices. This is a water based finish. Flexible and durable, this water based eggshell has good water shedding properties yet allows wood to breathe. For exterior use on wood and metal surfaces, including doors, window frames, cladding, barge boards, railing and gates, guttering and garden furniture. This is a water based finish. This finish has the hallmark Farrow & Ball mattness coupled with exceptional durability. Extremely tough and hard-wearing, it can be used on all masonry surfaces. Not available in all colours. This is a water based finish. For use on limestone, lime renders and plasters as well as wattle and daub. Not available in all colours. This is a water based finish. Suitable for interior plaster walls and ceilings. This paint has excellent covering power and breathes well. This is a traditional paint and though easy to apply requires some specialist understanding to achieve the best results. This is a water based finish. A simple, traditional distemper bound with natural resins to create a flat powdery finish. It allows ceilings to breathe and can be used on fine plasterwork to enhance detailing.
